Selectivity helped schools achieve higher rankings but limited opportunities for minorities, who tended to score worse on tests than whites for a range of reasons still hotly debated by academics. Mr. Lively believed those students could succeed if given extra time and resources."

Since I got in right out of college, I'm not really an expert on breaking in as an adult, nor am I an expert on freelance work. Any advice I could offer would just be guesswork, and you'd probably be better off just Googling around for suggestions from actual freelancers and the like.

That said, if you want to write on a specific topic and don't have prior published work, starting a blog (and regularly updating it with substantive content) isn't a horrible way to go.

Since you're a pumo, you get a lower-tier emperor. I rate you as Carus, a praetorian prefect who seized power after having the emperor Probus assassinated at the tail end of the 3rd Century Crisis. He reigned for about a year with some middling military success, but then died abruptly, according to one source because he was struck by lightning.

Workers Get Faster Access to Wages With These New Apps
Instant pay helps boost employee attendance, but can make saving hard to do

For more workers across America, every day is payday.

Uber Technologies Inc., McDonald’s Corp. and Bloomin’ Brands Inc.’s Outback Steakhouse are among a growing group of employers giving workers near-instant access to their wages through payday apps. The tools that allow people to spend the money they just earned have been available for a short time, but have provided some workers an alternative to short-term, high-interest loans, say the technology startups offering the services. The payment plan also can boost employee attendance and tenure, managers say.

Employers across the retail, restaurant and service sectors are searching for inexpensive perks to attract and hold on to employees in the face of low unemployment. For workers, immediate access to cash can provide liquidity to cover emergency costs, but economists say it is unclear whether smaller, more frequent paychecks will help U.S. households under financial strain.

“It’s almost like a drug” for employees, says Ed Shaw, executive vice president of human resources for Caspers Co., which operates 54 McDonald’s restaurants in Florida. Roughly 1,300 of the franchiser’s workers have signed up to use the smartphone app, Instant Financial, since Caspers began testing it in April. Workers have quickly taken to the service, Mr. Shaw says, as demonstrated by the waves of angry phone calls he received from workers on the few occasions that the app experienced a glitch.

Getting By
Most workers deposit less than $100 into their accounts using payroll serviceslike DailyPay after each workday.

Every day at 10 a.m., the app notifies users how much they earned in the previous workday, prompting them to decide if they want to deposit as much as half of that money onto a debit card. Roughly 20% of employees accept the money every day, says Mr. Shaw, who has reviewed aggregate usage data.

Daily payments could help some workers smooth out the financial volatility of fluctuating work schedules and income, economists say.

Many Americans remain on shaky financial footing with little in savings years after the recession’s end. That prompts some 12 million consumers to take out payday loans each year, which quickly accrue interest and fees, according to research by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Readily available cash might make it even harder for some workers to build savings.

Barbie Roland, a shift manager at Hardee’s in Callahan, Fla., says it took her a few weeks to figure out how often to cash out her daily earnings, after she was surprised by how little was left on payday. She accepted so many daily payments when first testing the Instant Financial app in October, that her biweekly paycheck shrank to $500 from around $900.

“I thought, did I really press accept that many times?” says Ms. Roland.

Since then, she has learned it is easier to budget if she cashes out three days of the five days she works, on average, taking home around $41 typically for the day, or half of her $10.25-an-hour wage.

“In some ways, employers are actually helping you save money by not paying you until the end of the month,” says Jonathan Morduch, an economics professor at New York University and director of the school’s Financial Access Initiative research center.

Even so, instant-pay perks are growing in popularity. More than 4,500 Outback steakhouse employees in the U.S. receive their tips through Instant Financial, and ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft offer similar features from other payroll partners for hundreds of thousands of drivers.

Some of the new apps like Instant Financial cost employees nothing to use and instead charge business owners a fee to operate the money-dispersement service. Others have a revenue model that eats as much as $3 from a worker’s daily paycheck.

The services have produced some unexpected benefits, managers say: Employees more willing to put in longer hours as they see the immediate results of their work.

The 86 crew members using Instant Financial at one McDonald’s restaurant in Tampa, Fla., now call in sick less often, says general manager Rebecca Kyeretwie. That’s saved her around 10 hours each week, which she previously needed to locate unscheduled employees to fill-in for those who didn’t show up.

“People are begging to come into work now,” says Ms. Kyeretwie, a 21-year McDonald’s veteran, who added that she can now reliably set shifts on the restaurant’s calendar days in advance. Ms. Kyeretwie says she doesn’t use the app personally, because she found it difficult to incorporate into her cycle of bill payments and investments.

Lawrence Davis quit a $400-a-week warehouse job about a year ago to become a courier with DoorDash Inc., lured by the notion of getting paid after each shift.

“It’s a blessing,” says Mr. Davis. While working full time in his previous job, he says he occasionally relied on short-term loans and cash advances if he needed quick cash to cover unexpected costs.

“Knowing that I’m going to get paid instantly keeps me working every day, and keeps the goals I’m trying to reach in mind,” says Mr. Davis. He says he typically works around nine or 10 hours a day, stopping when he has earned around $250, before taxes.

DailyPay Inc., a financial technology startup, administers the perk for DoorDash and other companies, including GrubHub Inc. DailyPay typically charges workers a fee from $1.25 to $3 each time they deposit their earnings into their accounts. The cost doesn’t bother Mr. Davis, he says, because he earns three or four times more than he did in his last job.

‘Angry Birds’ Maker’s Shares Dive
Finland’s Rovio posts an unexpected loss on higher spending on advertising and marketing

Shares of “Angry Birds” maker Rovio Entertainment Corp. plunged 22% Thursday after a surprise, third-quarter loss raised fresh questions about the company’s ability to navigate the fickle tastes of today’s mobile gamers.

Thursday’s rout came after the Finnish company reported its first earnings since going public in September. That listing—envisioned years ago when “Angry Birds” was a runaway hit and Rovio was one of Europe’s most promising tech startups—was scaled back sharply. Instead of listing in New York, the company chose the local Nasdaq Helsinki market. Investors valued the company at about $1 billion, far short of the $2 billion underwriters had hoped to hit.

Rovio’s fast ascent as one of the pioneers of mobile gaming—and its various attempts at remaking itself since then—has made it a poster child for the challenges of the nascent industry as a whole.

After starting out charging players to download its games, it adopted the “free-to-play” model rolled out by competitors like “Clash of Clans” maker Supercell. The model offers players the game for free, relying on in-game purchases and ads to generate revenue.

That has kept Rovio and competitors focused on luring and holding onto a very small slice of dedicated players. Only 2.5% of all mobile-game players ever spend money, according to analytics firm AppsFlyer.

Rovio’s head of games, Wilhelm Taht, said in an interview last month that the company wants to make fewer games per year and “run them like a service.” For example, in “Angry Birds 2,” players get five turns to complete a level. If they run out of turns, they can wait 30 minutes for a free turn, or buy turns to immediately play again.

Game makers have tried, with mixed results, to churn out new hits. In the meantime, they must tweak existing games to keep money-spending players from moving on. Rovio has also been spending heavily on advertising to bring in new players.

Rovio on Thursday said revenue rose 41.2% in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 to €70.7 million ($83.1 million) compared with the year-ago period. Rovio said 90% of its sales came from games, almost all of which were “Angry Birds” related. The rest came from licensing.

The game maker spent €22.2 million on “user acquisition” costs in the third quarter, quadrupling the €5.4 million it spent in the same period in 2016. Rovio also spent heavily on marketing the launch of its “Angry Birds Match” game in September.

The expenses hit profit. Rovio said it lost €800,000 in the period, compared with a profit of €3.9 million in the same period last year. Analysts and investors were expecting a hefty gain.

Rovio Chief Executive Kati Levoranta said the company’s strategy was to pump money into marketing its top performing games, and that it expected to recoup these costs in eight to 10 months.

Thursday’s earnings marked the latest swing for a company that helped popularize smartphone games when it released “Angry Birds” eight years ago. It tried to turn itself into an entertainment powerhouse, with in-house divisions that published books and produced a hit movie.

But two years ago it acknowledged it had ventured into too many businesses. It laid off employees and said it would focus on games. Rovio now licenses the non-gaming aspects of “Angry Birds,” including merchandise and a movie sequel, to third parties.

Another industry trailblazer, Zynga Inc., publisher of “Words with Friends,” has also struggled to stay profitable amid the competition. Its stock now trades for less than a third of its peak, in 2012.

Many of Rovio’s other big competitors have since been swallowed up by rivals or investors with deeper pockets. Videogame giant Activision Blizzard Inc. bought “Candy Crush” maker King Digital Entertainment in 2016 for $5.9 billion. Supercell, the “Clash of Clans” developer, in 2013 sold a 51% stake for $1.5 billion to Japan’s SoftBank Corp., before Chinese giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. and partners bought an 84.3% stake for $8.6 billion last year.

I rate you as Manuel I Komnenos, Byzantine Emperor in the 12th century.

Manuel I was the fourth son of John II, but was appointed his successor due to his superior ability even though he had an older brother still alive. Through decisive action, Manuel managed to not only take the throne, but also put aside his brother Isaac without having to murder, blind, castrate, or exile him.

Manuel's reign included the last real apex of Byzantine fortunes, as he campaigned hard on the fringes of the empire to restore territories lost to Islam or marauding Frankish knights. Manuel reclaimed Antioch for the empire, retook chunks of Anatolia from the Turks, and beat the shit out of the Kingdom of Sicily in an extended campaign.

With a little more good fortune, Manuel might have joined the ranks of the greatest Byzantine emperors and set the empire on the path to long-term survival. But the tail end of his reign included three major setbacks that instead marked him as the starting point for Byzantium's final, terminal decline. A major effort at reuniting the Western and Eastern churches failed (likely contributing to the successful attack on Constantinople in 1204), an invasion of Egypt in 1169 was similarly a costly failure, and most infamously, the Byzantines suffered a major defeat against the Turks at Myriokephalon in 1176. While the severity of the defeat is often overstated, a strong victory might have led to major gains in Anatolia and a permanent revitalization of the empire. Instead, they'd ever really get another shot and it would all be downhill from there.

The Rise and Fall of a Law-School Empire Fueled by Federal Loans
Don Lively’s mission to offer legal education to students rejected elsewhere is coming unraveled

Don Lively had a plan to bring more blacks and Hispanics into the practice of law.

Mr. Lively, a professor who is white, set out to open a law school that would take minority students even if they had low test scores or did poorly in college. Using retirement savings, a loan from his father and a check from a retired couple who read about him in a local newspaper, he opened Florida Coastal School of Law in 1996 in Jacksonville.

That school and two others he later helped run—Arizona Summit in Phoenix and Charlotte School of Law in North Carolina—became among the fastest-growing law schools in the country. Half of their students were from minority groups. The for-profit schools became part of a business network called the InfiLaw System, backed by Chicago private-equity investors. Enrollment soared from several dozen at Florida Coastal in 1996 to roughly 4,000 at the three schools combined in 2012.

Now, two decades after it all started, Mr. Lively’s mission is in tatters. The Charlotte school closed in August after North Carolina revoked its license. Enrollment in Arizona and Florida is down sharply, and InfiLaw is looking for buyers for both schools. Thousands of InfiLaw students have dropped out, transferred or failed state bar exams and are struggling to pay down a total of more than $1 billion in federal student loans, Education Department and American Bar Association data indicate. Many owe more than $100,000.

“The whole system broke down,” says Mr. Lively, 69 years old, who serves as Arizona Summit’s president and owns less than 1% of InfiLaw. “We weren’t ready to deliver on a scaled basis. We haven’t built up our academic support program to a level that would enable us to deliver those things that we were convinced that we could deliver.”

Federal student loans were central to the venture’s wild growth. Taxpayers could wind up on the hook for large chunks of InfiLaw student debt that never gets paid back, and the student borrowers face years of damaged credit.

Heavy borrowing by students at for-profit schools such as InfiLaw has contributed to a rapid expansion in student debt held by blacks. In the 1990s, black and white students, on average, owed roughly the same shortly after graduation. As of 2012, blacks owed nearly twice as much as whites, on average, four years after graduating from college, according to research by Columbia University economist Judith Scott-Clayton. She attributes the change partly to increasing black enrollment in for-profit graduate schools.

Mr. Lively, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, was teaching law at a public university in the early 1990s and had become frustrated, he says, with faculty egos and a lack of innovation at traditional law schools. He believed admissions practices hurt blacks and Hispanics.

Law schools rejected tens of thousands of applicants annually based largely on Law School Admission Test, or LSAT, scores. Selectivity helped schools achieve higher rankings but limited opportunities for minorities, who tended to score worse on tests than whites for a range of reasons still hotly debated by academics. Mr. Lively believed those students could succeed if given extra time and resources.

Around the time his plans to start a law school began taking shape, the Justice Department under President Bill Clinton ordered the American Bar Association to stop barring for-profit law schools from receiving accreditation. The bar association also made other changes designed to address what the Justice Department deemed cartellike behavior in higher education. U.S. officials believed competition from private-sector schools could help drive down prices, says James Tierney, a former Justice Department lawyer who helped draft the order.

In the mid-1990s, Mr. Lively met Bernie and Rita Turner, a retired couple in their 70s who had started Walden University, now owned by for-profit Laureate Education Inc. The couple liked his social mission. “What do you do with this mass of people that don’t have the breaks that the more affluent have?” asks Mr. Turner. He and his wife invested 40% of the roughly $1.4 million Mr. Lively used to start Florida Coastal.

Florida Coastal had mixed results at first but eventually put up impressive numbers. In July 2009, 83% of its first-time test takers passed the Florida state bar exam, which had an overall pass rate of 80%. Mr. Lively attributed the success to small class sizes and an academic support team that helped students individually.

By the early 2000s, however, his school needed money for capital improvements, Mr. Lively says. Its building was in disrepair, the parking lot frequently flooded and he needed to pay professors more to retain them.

Mr. Lively turned to Wall Street. He was impressed, he says, with the social mission of Chicago private-equity firm Sterling Partners and its experience in other education ventures, including Sylvan Learning Systems, a tutoring and test-preparation service.

Sterling, which today has about $4 billion in assets under management, saw a business opportunity, says one former investor of InfiLaw. There was “surplus demand” for legal education, he says. About 100,000 people were applying to law schools every year, but only about half were accepted, American Bar Association data show.

Florida Coastal law school was sold to Sterling in 2004. A news report at the time said the price was $15 million. Mr. Lively says he received about $1.2 million and the rest went to the Turners, several other investors and key employees.

Mr. Lively had wanted to expand Florida Coastal, but Sterling was thinking bigger, he says. It wanted to open law schools in other markets. If the business model worked in Jacksonville, why not replicate it nationally? Sterling identified markets without enough law schools, including Phoenix and Charlotte, Mr. Lively says.

InfiLaw was created as a holding company to own the schools. The new company lined up more investors, including Harvard University’s endowment fund, according to a former owner of Charleston School of Law in South Carolina who later participated in buyout negotiations with InfiLaw. A spokesman for Harvard Management Co. said it doesn’t comment on its investments.

In 2006, the year Charlotte opened, Congress approved a loan program known as Grad Plus. It allowed graduate students to borrow unlimited sums to cover tuition and living costs. Previously they were limited to $18,500 a year.

No higher-education sector used Grad Plus as much as law, Education Department data show. InfiLaw students eventually piled up more than $700 million in Grad Plus debt, and another $300 million from older loan programs, Education Department data show. InfiLaw says tuition represents about two-thirds of the annual cost of attending its schools full time, and living expenses are a third. Annual tuition is about $45,400 at Arizona Summit and $46,000 at Florida Coastal, roughly in line with the national average for private law schools.

Out of Favor

Law-school enrollment, after peaking in 2010, has fallen to the lowest level since the 1970s.

By 2010, with the U.S. labor market strengthening, the number of Americans seeking higher education began falling sharply, and news reports began appearing about a shortage of high-paying jobs in law. Law-school enrollment, after peaking in 2010, fell about 30% through 2015 to the lowest level since the 1970s, according to the website Law School Transparency.

Law schools, competing for fewer applicants, lowered admissions standards to fill their classes, according to research by Aaron Taylor, head of the AccessLex Center for Legal Education, a nonprofit research group. Admission rates across all law schools rose to a collective 51% in 2013, from 36% in 2010.

InfiLaw schools also lowered admissions standards, and they grew rapidly. Some classes roughly doubled in size, former professors say. Administrators believed they were having success with students with below-average standardized-test scores and could work with students even further below the average.

“If your bar-pass is solid, which it was, why not grow?” says Susan Daicoff, an Arizona Summit professor who previously worked at Florida Coastal.

David Frakt, who interviewed to be dean of Florida Coastal in 2014, says he was shocked when school officials showed him the incoming class’s academic credentials. Over half the students were what he called “extremely high risk,” having ranked in the bottom quarter of LSAT takers and, in many cases, having low grades in college.

Lowering the Bar

Infilaw lowered admissions standards to attract more students. Many of them later failed state bar exams.

Other law schools typically admitted few such students. InfiLaw schools were marketing to them and admitting them by the hundreds each year, Mr. Frakt says.

Mr. Frakt says he warned the school’s president, Dennis Stone, that most of those new students would fail the bar and default on loans. He says Mr. Stone dismissed those concerns. The school didn’t offer him the job.

Mr. Stone didn’t respond to requests for comment. Rick Inatome, Infilaw’s chief executive and a Sterling partner, declined to comment, citing current negotiations about the future of Infilaw’s two remaining schools.

Bryan Forbes, 32, says he was turned down by several law schools for having a below-average LSAT score and undergraduate grade-point average. Charlotte School of Law accepted him. He began in 2014. A year later he was “academically dismissed,” he says. “I was kind of unprepared on my side.”

He had borrowed about $36,000 from the government for his one semester, a balance that has grown, he says, because he hasn’t made a payment. He now works as a customer-service agent at a bank.

InfiLaw allowed applicants to take a boot-camp-style course and then an exam to win admission even if they had very low LSAT scores. Andrew McAdams, who taught at the Charlotte school from 2014 to 2015, recalls grading exams for one such class of about 25 potential applicants. Every student scored extremely poorly and was “grossly unprepared” for law school, he says. “I just can’t in good faith see any of these students getting in,” he recalled thinking. The school admitted roughly five or six of them, he says.

InfiLaw and Charlotte School of Law, in a statement released by Mr. Lively, said Mr. McAdams’s story “does not seem credible.” Mr. McAdams says the school bought out his contract after he told them he intended to leave. The school says it chose not to renew his contract.

Many students dropped out. Others graduated but failed the state bar exams they need to pass to practice law. At Arizona Summit, 26% of first-time takers of the Arizona exam passed in July of this year, compared with a state average of 69%, state supreme court records show.

Mr. Lively acknowledges a big mistake. To lure prospective students, Arizona Summit made certain bar-preparation courses optional, allowing students to take courses catering to their interests. Many opted out of the bar-prep courses and were unprepared at test time.

Once troubling trends emerged, Mr. Lively says, InfiLaw schools raised admissions standards and reduced enrollment. Arizona Summit recently began requiring the bar-prep courses again, he says.

“I don’t have any quibble with anyone who would criticize us for our outcomes,” says Mr. Lively. “I do have problems with people who attack us on the basis of motive.”

Former Charlotte professor Barbara Bernier filed a federal whistleblower civil lawsuit alleging the Charlotte school defrauded the government by admitting “academically unqualified” students to boost finances. The lawsuit said Infilaw’s “for-profit framework and culture dominated academic issues.” Ms. Bernier said in an interview that at one faculty meeting, Charlotte’s then-President Chidi Ogene mentioned the need to boost school finances to satisfy investors and warned of layoffs if the school didn’t grow.

The library at Arizona Summit Law School. PHOTO: DOMINIC VALENTE FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Mr. Ogene denies making such a statement but says he discussed with the staff ways to control costs and raise revenue. A spokeswoman for the Charlotte School says the allegations in the lawsuit are “without merit.”

The U.S. attorney in Orlando has declined to get involved in the suit, which calls for the government to be reimbursed $285 million in student aid. If successful as a whistleblower, Ms. Bernier would stand to get a portion of any recovered money.

The Charlotte school closed in August after failing to satisfy state regulators’ concerns about its finances and regulatory problems with the bar association stemming from admissions practices, according to North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein. He said in a written statement he is investigating for possible violations of consumer-protection laws, relating partly to “how the school marketed itself to prospective students.” Fewer than one in five original members of the class of 2016 graduated, passed the bar exam and landed a job that required a law degree, Mr. Stein said.

Mr. Stein has urged U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to use federal law to forgive any student debt taken out by Charlotte students during or after the fall 2016 semester. An Education Department spokeswoman said Ms. DeVos is considering the request.

InfiLaw is in talks with nonprofit schools to take over or go into partnership with the Phoenix and Jacksonville schools, says Mr. Lively.

Mr. Lively says he never got rich on InfiLaw and likely would have earned more had he stayed in nonprofit education. He said his role in the company will be determined by the new owners of the schools, and that he will tell them what he told Sterling shortly after the initial purchase.

“They asked the question, ‘Who’s dispensable here?’” Mr. Lively said. “I raised my hand. ‘If you think I can be of any value I’m happy to stay. If you want me to move on, I’m very cool with that.’ ”

I remember when I was younger a friend of mine in college who lived in South America as part of the country's elite told me that in any South American country you could get anything delivered - McDonalds, Booze, Cigs, you name it there was someone to deliver it.

I asked him why it was like that there and he said it was a combination of labor being super cheap and people being heavily secured/withdrawn/paranoid about crime - so after 2008 or so when the "Gig Economy" or "Sharing Economy" started to boom I realized that the US was being slowly but surely turned into a Third World Brazillian hellscape by this shit

San Francisco Deltas 'soccer startup' folds after 1 year

The San Francisco Deltas recently completed a fairytale expansion year with a North American Soccer League championship. Unfortunately, the team's success on the pitch could not overcome its struggles off the field.
"We are closing down the San Francisco Deltas," CEO Brian Andres Helmick announced in a blog post Friday morning after the team reportedly lost several million dollars and had trouble finding its niche in the crowded Bay Area sports market.
"As many of you have said, this journey that started in 2015 has the makings of a movie with character-defining struggles, heroic moments, painful defeats, and overcoming seemingly impossible hurdles all culminating in a dream come true on Sunday, November 12th when the SF Deltas were crowned the national champions after defeating the New York Cosmos - arguably the most storied brand in U.S. Soccer history," Helmick post continued. "I'll never forget the scene of thousands of fans storming the field. Now that the celebration has come to an end, players and coaches have been released from their contracts."
A former tech company CEO, Helmick tried to combine the best practices of the Bay Area startup tech industry with a community-first vision for the club. The Deltas planned to bring tech-inspired innovations to its games, including a virtual-reality fan experience and Artificial Intelligence (AI) ticketing that was never fully realized.
"For me, this has always been a soccer club first, but I do believe that any club can benefit from the startup mentality of being lean, transparent and always being willing to listen to its fans," Helmick explained.
To spread the word in the Bay Area, the team decided against an extensive marketing campaign and instead decided for a pound the pavement approach by reaching out to the potential fans one at a time.
"You need to go out there, touch them, hug them, drink a beer with them and really listen to them to make sure we are doing things that they want us to do," Helmick said in 2016.
Despite the team's outreach and ambitions, they struggled out of the gate. After 4,400 fans attended the opening match at Kezar Stadium, the team went through a period of games averaging just over 2000 fans through the first half of the season. Helmick wrote a mid-season blog post warning about the team's financial issues and challenged fans to help fix the team's problems with attendance as well as possibly attract more outside investment.
"The analogy I think of is 'If I'm drowning, and I don't tell you I'm drowning, you're not going to jump into the pool to save me,'" Helmick told SFGate in July.
He blamed a combination of factors for the club's problems, including the plethora of entertainment options in San Francisco. On social media, most complaints about the Deltas centered on the cold weather, the location of Kezar Stadium, parking and ticket prices. Tickets for most home games ranged from $19 to $124 for VIP seats.

Despite the team developing a small group of committed supporters they only recorded a modest uptick in total ticket sales after Helmick's midseason challenge. With financial losses mounting they traded away player Danny Cruz in August, and members of the SF Deltas front office started to leave beginning in September.
"I strived to be honest with them and to always treat them with respect, so I hope that eased hearing facts that may have been hard to accept," Helmick said. "We started the Deltas with a three to five-year plan, but the reality is that future seasons are never guaranteed in professional sports. In any business, startup or otherwise, it's important to evaluate the viability of the enterprise and be ready to make the difficult decision to change the original plan."
Helmick pledged that the team will pay all its bills, including what's owed players, coaches, staff, partners, and vendors despite closing its doors. "I consider all of them family, and it was very important that I keep the promises I made to them," he said.
With all the uncertainty off the field, Deltas head coach Marc Dos Santos did a brilliant job keeping the team focused on the pitch. San Francisco lost only two of their final 16 regular season games, including going undefeated during a brutal stretch of seven games in 21 days in October. The team's hard work earned the Deltas a second place finish in the NASL and a home match in the playoffs.
The Deltas defeated North Carolina 1-0 in the semifinal game. The New York Cosmos upset first-place Miami FC to set up a championship match before a sold-out crowd at Kezar.
San Francisco rode an early penalty kick goal by Tommy Heinemann, and a clinching score from Devon Sandoval as the clock expired to defeat the Cosmos 2-0. At the end of the game, the team's fans stormed the pitch to celebrate the title.
The demise of the Deltas continues San Francisco's checkered history of professional soccer. The city's previous team, the second-division California Victory, survived only one season as well in 2007. The San Francisco Seals also ran a minor league soccer team that folded in 1999.
"We remain a big believer in the market, as evidenced by the atmosphere and crowd at The Championship Final earlier this month, and we still believe that the city deserves a professional soccer team," NASL interim commissioner Rishi Sehgal said after the Deltas' announcement. "We are in active discussions with potential ownership groups and we aim to keep professional soccer in San Francisco in the future."
Helmick plans to share the lessons he learned running the Deltas in the upcoming months. He hopes they will benefit other fledgling pro soccer teams in the Bay Area or elsewhere.
"This experience did not sour me on soccer," he said. "It gave me memories I'll have forever, but it did teach me that we need greater transparency and collaboration at all levels if we want to improve the sport we all love."

I rate you as Septimius Severus.

The Roman Emperor enjoyed a very good run from Vespasian through Marcus Aurelius (even Domitian wasn't that horrible if you weren't a senator), but went south in a bad way once Aurelius passed the empire to his son Commodus. Commodus suffered from megalomania and was eventually strangled by a wrestler in the baths (heh).

Rome then went through a period of nasty disorder. Pertinax tried to restore order to the Praetorian Guard, but was murdered after failing to supply an expected monetary donativum. The office of emperor was then auctioned off by the Guard to Didius Julianus, who was allegedly pressured into bidding by his shrew wife. Not good.

Enter Septimius Severus. Born in Africa and of mixed Italian and Punic heritage, Severus ascended the ranks of the Roman military, and was eventually given command of Pannonia, a critical border province with a large army. Following the murder of the well-liked Pertinax, Severus got pretty irate, had himself declared emperor, and marched into Italy. Didius was killed before he even showed up, but Severus also had Pertinax's killers whacked and took the bonus step of disbanding the old Praetorian Guard, which had repeatedly caused problems for the emperor. Severus then defeated and killed two other generals who had tried to claim the imperial title in the wake of Pertinax's assassination.

Severus is notable as the last undisputed emperor for about a century who didn't die in captivity or by violence. A capable soldier, he fought campaigns from Britain to Africa to Parthia, generally solidifying and occasionally expanding the Empire's frontiers. In an effort to stop a repeat of his path to the purple, Severus reformed the Praetorian Guard as a massive army that traveled with the Emperor, essentially ensuring that the Emperor always had the largest army in the empire under his personal control.

However, these military efforts came at a cost, as he expanded the armed forces, increased soldier pay, and debased the currency to pay for it all. Severus also spent almost no time in Rome itself, preferring to stay out on campaign where he was most needed. These shifts played a marked role in Rome's transformation into what was, essentially, an unstable military dictatorship throughout the 3rd century AD. Also, much like Aurelius, Severus made a major mistake by allowing his sons to inherit from him, even though 1. They both hated each other, making conflict inevitable, and 2. Caracalla in particular was an unstable lunatic asshole.

San Francisco has officially accepted to support the “comfort women” statue - representing the women forced to work as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War Two – and the Mayor of Osaka, Japan says he no longer wants to have a sister city relationship.

The “Comfort Women Justice Association” are hoping the statue will help remind people of the thousands of Asian women forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during the war.

The statue was unveiled at San Francisco’s St. Mary’s Park Plaza in September depicting three young women from Korea, China, and Philippines holding hands while standing in a circle.

“It’s really one of the worst atrocities that happened to women in modern history,” said a member of the Comfort Women Justice Association.

Despite the symbolic importance of the statue, the Mayor of Osaka, Japan is opposed to the monument and even plans to end the sister city relationship with San Francisco, which was established in 1957.

The Mayor of Osaka, Japan is not the only one opposed to the statue, in fact in a letter sent to the board of supervisors Dana Sack asked, “Why single out the Japanese living today for conduct by people long dead, and a government conquered, it’s leaders imprisoned and executed.”

Several supporters of the monument say city leaders should stand with the “comfort women” statue and all victims of sexual violence.
