A Thai soldier was killed and eight others wounded when Cambodian troops fired shells and rockets at Thai military and civilian targets on Monday morning.
Thai forces hit back to stop the attacks, air force planes striking military targets.
Thai army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said Cambodian troops began directing rifle and indirect fire at targets in the Chong An Ma area of Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani, from 5.05am.
At 7am the Royal Thai Army was informed that a Thai soldier had been killed and four others wounded by a Cambodian attack in Chong Bok area in Nam Yuen district, he said.
At a subsequent press conference, Maj Gen Winthai said that eight Thai soldiers were wounded and at least one soldier was killed. Another reported fatality had yet to be confirmed, he said.
Cambodia expanded its attacks to include Huai Ta Maria area in Si Sa Ket as well as Khana, Ta Khwai and Ta Muen areas in Surin.
Maj Gen Winthai said Thai soldiers returned fire and Thai fighter jets attacked many Cambodian military targets to halt the Cambodian aggression.
The 2nd Army said that at 8.30am Cambodian rockets fired from BM-21 launchers hit Ban Sai Tho 10 in Ban Kruat district, Buri Ram.
Monday’s border attacks by Cambodia followed its attack in Si Sa Ket province on Sunday afternoon, when two Thai soldiers were wounded.
Sunday's attack prompted the evacuation of residents in border areas of four northeastern provinces bordering Cambodia. More than 385,000 people were moved from risk areas along the border, the 2nd Army said.
The attacks resumed on Monday morning.
The 2nd Army reported that about 10pm on Sunday Cambodia deployed tanks in Samrong area of Oddar Meanchey province and evacuated people from border areas.
About 11pm Cambodia began full-scale warfare preparations along its border with Thailand. It strengthened its military bases, turned off mobile phones, deployed drones and prepared a reception for army commanders.
Beginning about midnight, Cambodia on Monday deployed RM-70 multiple rocket launchers in Chom Krasan district of Preah Vihear province and evacuated local villages.
About 1am, Cambodia deployed BM-21 and Type 90B multiple rocket launchers in Samrong, Oddar Meanchey.
About 3am Cambodia aimed weapons targeting Buri Ram airport in Buri Ram province and at Prasat Hospital in Surin province.
About 3.25am Cambodia aimed weapons at Ban Kachai Noi village in Ban Dan district, Buri Ram, which is 13 kilometres from Buri Ram airport. The village is 87 kilometres from the border.
Cambodia also aimed weapons at Ban Chruk Khwae village in Prasat district of Surin. The village is 31 kilometres from the border.
Thai air force spokesman AM Jackrit Thammavichai said Thai fighter jets were used to stop Cambodian military operations which harmed Thai security and people.
The jet deployment responded to Cambodia's heavy military activity along the border, which posed widespread risk to Thai territory. Air force planes targeted only military bases, exercising the right to self defence, necessity and proportionality, he said.
In Sa Kaeo province, the 1st Army ordered the evacuation of people from border areas, beginning about 7am.
