I always wondered what happens to anyone who studies a middle-school/high-school language for like 7 years and gets a 5 on the AP Exam. But it seems like no one remembers anything. Is this generally true?

I studied French in middle school/high school/college (minored in it) + got a 5 on the AP exam. I can still speak French & with a few months of immersion I'd be fluent again
