good review. i read about this time period earlier this year and came to the same conclusions as charles did. the same pattern(s) of degeneration and decline play out at the end of every great civilization and subsequent empire
america, and europe in its own, separate way, will be replaced by something else, something new. they can't be "reformed" or restored. just like the rest of these past civilizations and empires

"China" today isn't at all the same as "China" 2500 years ago, genetically or culturally or otherwise
the chinese ruling class has always forcememed civilizational continuity even when it doesn't exist, because it's to their benefit and legitimizes them. also imho it's an objectively good and healthy thing for a society to think of itself as a continuous organ, even if it's artificially forcememed to some extent
every chinese dynasty (for the most part) should be thought of as a separate civilization that rose and fell in cycles

its good writing because its an in depth review that any reasonably smart high schooler could understand, not mountains of "philosophical" babble. he goes a bit into the weeds towards the end writing more generally about the hellenistic age, but by that point he's given a great window into what to expect from the author
I think I will read it, seems like a fun book even if I will barely remember any of it
