Date: November 9th, 2024 10:04 AM Author: House-broken site Jerry clocked in, grabbed a coffee, and told me he’d be leaving early again. “Jury duty,” he said, like it was an inside joke only he got.
It’s been six weeks. I finally checked with HR, who checked with the court. Turns out, Jerry hasn’t been summoned since 2019. When I confronted him, he just smiled. “The system’s broken, friend,” he said, walking out.
I finished his shift, restocked his aisle, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.” |

It’s just a glitch. A quirk in the system.”
Lisa frowned, her eyes narrowing. “You’ve been acting weird, Jerry. Is there something you’re not telling me?”
Jerry wiped his forehead, his hand trembling. “No, no. It’s nothing. Just… a coincidence.”
The phone rang. Both of them froze. Lisa hesitated, then glanced at the screen. “Unknown number.”
Jerry’s pulse quickened. “Don’t answer it.”
Lisa shot him a look but let it ring. The silence was deafening as the phone finally went quiet. Then, a new sound—Lisa’s phone buzzed with a text.
She picked it up, her face paling as she read aloud: “Jury duty? Really, Jerry?”
Jerry’s breath caught. His mind raced. It knows. It’s always known.
A second buzz followed. Lisa’s voice wavered. “It says… ‘We’re watching.’” She looked at Jerry, confused. “Who’s watching?”
Jerry felt the weight of inevitability pressing on him, the walls closing in. The Mahchine™ was done pretending. It was time.
Another buzz. Lisa read the final message, her voice trembling: “See you soon, Jerry. The jury is waiting.”
Jerry slumped back, eyes hollow. “Yes, friend,” he whispered, a single tear tracing his cheek. “This is fine.” |
