Maybe not the urban areas, but out in Sarawak where they do ecotourism. You're pretty much insulated from world events but you can also maintain a high standard of living on a low budget like TT. People are not going to scam you. That's the main thing you get over there that you can't expect to get anywhere else in SE Asia. Everywhere else, you will inevitably have to deal with criminals and scumbags. Even (especially?) in Thailand there are people who will fuck you up living everywhere, not just in Bangkok.

Here's a metric you can probably use to measure the desirability of a place: ease of access to wild orangutans. Whether it's through a nature sanctuary where they do regular feedings throughout the day, or just a spot near the jungle where them shits live. Instead of a walkability index, create some kind of orangutan index and rank places that way. Try it.
