they're very similar except billy is a legit musician and songwriter and bruce is a 3 chord jersey shore bar singer (albeit the best one). they're both rock and roll interlopers playing for suburban normies to unimaginable success. to their credit they both are known for banging out extended high energy concerts.

anyway, i'd take billy every time.

I’ve seen him live a few times. I don’t really care for his albums but his live shows were the best concerts I ever went to. No opening act, dude comes out and plays 4 hours, no autotune, no backing tracks, no flown-in vocals. Just turned on the house lights and played rock and roll from 8 till midnight. No one will be able to do this in a few years; it will be lost knowledge like the moon landing.

that's the thing, he was always pretty good but rarely great. he should've been an east coast legend instead a worldwide celebrity. tom petty did the same thing way better, so did mellencamp. and they're all just poppy versions of bob dylan. but bruce made his reputation from his working man image and his live shows more than his songs.

ljl i just listened to thunder road and jfc it's terrible.

his singing is so bad and put on, like he's always constipated. and he's always so over the top dramatic. his songs are never really musically or lyrically interesting, they're just like pretty good and "passionate" i guess?

he seems like a 180 bro though, unlike billy who is pretty much a dick.

a grand tour of a lost america. the original sessions for the darkness album had nearly 50 tracks. you can arrange them into a 3-hour 'album' and listen to it while on a road-trip.

both, but the mood ends up being the same. we wasn't a trust-fund kid. he DID grow up in blue-collar new jersey. he WAS shaped by 'svengalis' and promoters. it was always a mix of those elements.

I think he experienced a lot of what he used to write about-- working class, ethnic whites growing up in the 1960s in kinda liminal areas (not suburbs but not the city, not rich but not poor).

It depends on the album-- Nebraska should be listened to while: 1) driving through a lonely highway at 2 am alone; or 2) sitting in the dark drinking whiskey (again, alone) while contemplating how shitty your life turned out to be.

Agree with general sentiment here: Boomer flame but his live shows are energetic and impressive (albeit intended for our parents’ generation and 55yo drunk white women)—I went once with my dad last-minute when his buddy couldn’t make it.

Only peer I know who was into it was a guy in college who was very into being from NJ and by default liked everything NJ.
