I always found this line of thought dumb. Renaissance-era English people were intellectually evolved in a way not fathomable to contemporary American and Euromutt blockheads. A lot of Shakespeare’s output was just reworking old myths and legends and oracles to appeal to the mass audience of his era but people are so dumb now that it seems all so erudite and impenetrable.
