Went to funeral for young woman who killed herself. We don't stigmatize suicide

She had attempted suicide a few times before. It really destroyed her family & her young sister was visibly distraught and angry, it was hard to watch. Then the funeral was a lot of trite anecdotes about her life and how awesome she was. Which is what people who do it want. It's bad because of how hard it is for all the people who are still alive who loved and cared about the person. Christians were cr in classifying it as a sin in this way |

You killing yourself has an effect on the living, and it's a bad effect, therefore killing yourself is always going to be bad in the eyes of the living (the only people who matter) |

the issue here is that selfish has a negative association. but we all behave selfishly all. a completely selfless person would give all their resources away and die of hunger. every time you eat something instead of giving it to a starving person you've behaved selfishly. you decided to prioritize your own needs above theirs.
so if a person values their non-existence over the happiness their existence provides others, i don't think it's selfish in terms of *unjustly* prioritizing yourself. |
