SJPD Investigates Shooting at Westfield Valley Fair Mall

On November 28, 2025, at approximately 5:40 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the Westfield Valley Fair Mall located at 2855 Stevens Creek Boulevard following multiple reports of a shooting. SJPD, supported by several neighboring agencies, arrived quickly and determined the incident was isolated and not an active-shooter event.

Officers located three victims: an adult male, an adult female, and a 16-year-old female. All were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were later determined to be non-life-threatening.

Preliminary details indicate the suspect became involved in a verbal altercation with the adult male victim before producing a firearm from his waistband and firing multiple rounds. During the shooting, the two female victims were struck by stray gunfire and are not believed to have been involved in the dispute. Initial information revealed the incident to be gang-motivated; however, the circumstances remain under investigation.

SJPD’s entire Special Operations Division responded to the scene to clear the mall, assisted by Officers from SJPD Patrol, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, the Santa Clara Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

“A shooting in a crowded mall on a busy shopping day is deeply concerning,” said SJPD Chief Paul Joseph. “To reassure our community, we are increasing patrols throughout the weekend while our Detectives continue their focused work to identify and locate the individual responsible. I have full confidence the suspect will be brought to justice swiftly.”

“I am praying for the three gunshot victims and for the thousands of people for whom a holiday shop became a survival mission,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. “Thanks to our SJPD officers for responding quickly and to the Valley Fair employees and neighbors who opened their shops, their garages and their homes to protect those fleeing. Since last night, our law enforcement teams have been working nonstop not just to find and hold the suspect accountable, but to make sure our public spaces are secure. We are upping patrols at Valley Fair and will continue to update the community as the investigation continues. Please know — the person who caused this pain and fear will not get away with it, we will find them and they will face their crimes.”

"An incident like this is alarming for everyone," said City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "I am grateful for the swift, coordinated response from our Police Department and our regional partners. Our priority now is supporting the victims and ensuring our community feels safe as the investigation moves forward.”

SJPD would like to acknowledge and thank all responding agencies for their assistance during this incident and the ensuing investigation, including Valley Fair Mall Security. We also extend our appreciation to the San José Fire Department and Santa Clara County EMS for their swift response and professional care of the victims.

Anyone with any information that could assist this investigation is asked to contact Detective Guevara #4669 of the San José Police Department Gang Investigations Unit via email at 4669@sanjoseca.gov or by phone at 408-277-3835.
