EVs hit the market in like the last 5-7 years fag. get real.

Also the issue isn't the product, its the infrastructure. Where the infrastructure exists, people buy more EVs. Simple.

But ya, cant really buy an EV right now in USA, not due to the EVs themselves, but do to the lack of public infrastructure.

Objectively, EV's are far superior to ICE cars. This is not really a debatable proposition. They offer far more features and require far less maintenance. The fact that they are cleaner is a nice bonus.

EV's have two main problems, in my opinion. The first is lack of charging infrastructure. That is mostly fixed these days. Going on a road trip in an EV was a dicey proposition as recently as a few years ago, but it's easy today. But there still needs to be better slow charging infrastructure in cities, particularly for people who live in apartments and can't charge at home. But the infrastructure is improving rapidly.

The other big issue is cost. Even with subsidies, EV's were not cost competitive with ICE cars until very recently. Even today, EV's are slightly more expensive, although the monthly cost usually turns out to be cheaper once you factor in lower gas/maintenance costs. But ICE cars are not getting any cheaper whereas the cost of EV's is dropping rapidly. The battery is the most expensive part of an EV, and lithium ion battery prices have been dropping by about 8% per year. Today, the cost of an EV battery is about the same as the cost of an internal combustion engine. It will be much cheaper within 2-3 years. So, it is likely that soon EV's will be cheaper to manufacture than ICE cars, which means the prices at dealers should also be cheaper.

It's a tough spot for car manufacturers. No one really questions that EV's are the technology of the future. But the current demand is tepid. If they spend too much on EV's, they risk losing a ton of money in the short term. But if they don't, they will be bankrupt in a few years when cheap Chinese EV's flood the country and they can't compete. Ford may have scaled back their current EV operations, but they remain committed to creating their $30,000 electric truck in a few years. And the survival of their company may depend on its success.

"Objectively they are superior!"

Except, as you note, when you consider cost... or the ability to fuel it... or the dozen other things that are actually the key criteria for regular people when they purchase a car.

Which is why no one wants them. But autistic retards would really like it if someone forced folks to buy them anyway.

It's amazing how much EVs have fallen off. They're a much better and more convenient product. I go to the "gas station" for a charge like 4 times a year on trips.

But somehow Biden spent billions to build no charging network and make EVs less popular.

Biden's biggest mistake was that, by promoting EV's, he convinced half the country that EV's are "woke" and therefore must be avoided at all costs. If Biden had promoted iPhones, Farm Animals would still be using their Nokia flip phones.

The other issue is that people don't realize how much the EV charging infrastructure has improved in the past few years. People think that you can't take EV's on road trips, which was basically true for non-Tesla EV's a few years ago, but it isn't even close to being true today. I tell people that I took my EV on a thousand-mile road trip and spent no more time charging than I would have spent at the gas station, and people don't believe me.

EV's offer far more features than ICE cars, have far better performance and acceleration, and require far less maintenance. They don't pollute. And within a few years, they will be significantly cheaper than ICE cars if battery prices continue dropping at their current rate. But otherwise they are pointless, I guess. Enjoy your Nokia flip phone, Farm Animal.

Why do Farm Animals believe any stupid shit that they hear on Fox News? It is true that the manufacture of EV's is slightly more harmful to the environment than manufacturing an ICE car. But when you consider an ICE car belching emissions into the atmosphere for 20+ years while an EV emits nothing during that time, EV's are far cleaner. It's not particularly close.

Like I said, enjoy your flip phone, Farm Animal.

Wut? There is a dude with over a million miles on his Model S. Try that in an ICE car. EV's have fewer moving parts, so they last basically forever. You will lose battery range as the car gets older, but full battery failure is extremely rare in a modern EV. You're far more likely to have your engine or transmission go bad in an ICE car.

Continually repeating your bullshit doesn't make it true, Farm Animal. Learn to use your fucking brain rather than just mindlessly repeating what Fox News tells you. The reality is that, for modern EV's, the likelihood of a battery failure is significantly less than the likelihood of an engine or transmission failure in an ICE car. The first generation Leaf's were prone to battery failure, but this hasn't been an issue for a decade now.

Are you actually stupid enough to believe one word of anything you wrote? Or are you an autist who can't admit that you don't know what you are talking about? As far as I know, every EV manufacturer will replace your battery if it loses more than 30% of its range within 100k miles. Most have warranties that are more generous than that. Battery replacements are extremely rare for modern EV's. As for the claim that engines don't fail any more, tell that to my friend who just had to junk her car because the engine went bad.

lol at getting a car with a “warranty”. regular cars have been perfected and you can pick one up a used one for barely anything and it will run for another 10 years. This fact has pissed off GC so they want everyone to drive iPhones with wheels that they can make obsolete whenever they feel like it or whenever the shitty battery craps out which is usually a year or two

2010 I bought a 2006 bmw for $11.5k. Finally got rid of it last year. No real issues other than the transfer case shit with the awd. Other car was a cpo from dealer 2015 bought in 2019 for $25k.

I guess if you enjoy lighting money on fire you can go buy a tesla for 3x that plus have to spend several thousand rigging up your garage to plug the fucker in (which you’ll have to do again once they decide to change the charging mechanism)

The amount of pollution/carbon needed to power an EV is significantly less than the pollution/carbon generated by an ICE car if that is what you are asking. Long-term, the price of solar is dropping ridiculously quickly. It is likely that we will have unlimited free solar power during the day in 15-20 years, so cleanly powering EV's (and everything else) probably won't be an issue in the near future.

From what I hear they're great for urban commuters who preferably don't live anywhere cold (this discharges the batteries). So they have a niche but they were never for widespread usage.

This is completely idiotic. How many times per year does a person need to drive more than 40-50 miles in a day? Range is an absolute non-issue unless you are on a road trip. And even on a road trip, either I or one of my passengers has to stop to pee long before I am going to run out of battery.

In 2+ years of EV driving, the only time that range was an issue was when I was on a trip to a rural area in the mountains with no fast charging nearby. I had to make a long detour to a fast charger when it became obvious that my battery wouldn't last the entire trip. But at home, range is a non-issue because I charge to full in my garage every night. On the highway, range is a non-issue because the range of my car is much greater than the range of my bladder. Under normal conditions, range loss due to cold weather is not a concern.

Even if that is true, essentially all modern EV's have a range of 250+ miles. I think it is safe to say that very few commuters drive more than 250 miles per day.

Yes, it is so much easier to drive 10-15 minutes and wait around while your car fills up than it is to plug a fucking cord into the wall. Do Farm Animals realize how stupid they sound? Even then, it isn't critical that you plug in every single night unless you plan to drive 200+ miles the next day. Charging 1-2 times per week is enough for people with normal commutes.

First of all, you don't need a charging station unless you drive a lot every day. A 110V outlet will do the job albeit a bit more slowly. If you have a 220V outlet in your garage, you don't need a charging station at all. If you do decide to get one, I think all new cars in North America have agreed to adopt Tesla's NACS standard for charging. But if the standard changed for some reason, you get an adapter for $20. Also, my power company paid for my EV charger, so it cost me nothing. I wasn't going to install one because I didn't need it, but I figured there was no reason not to when it was free.

I really like my Cybertruck, but it has nothing to do with the fact that's an EV. The automation tech is 180 and is the reason I got it. Wish I could get the same tech in a more conventional ICE truck.

You will never get that in an ICE truck because ICE vehicles don't generate enough electricity to power all the cameras and computers needed for autonomous driving. There is a reason that all Waymos are EV's. This is one of the big reasons that I say that EV's are superior and will be the cars of the future. They will probably all drive themselves within 5-10 years. ICE cars will never be able to do that.

Not sure that’s true. Google AI says Tesla computing consumes 100 watts or less. That’s not much, but even if it’s grossly low you can have a big ass alternator on an ICE if you need it. Engineering is different, but it should be feasible. Musk claims he has offered to license full self driving but has had no takers. Traditional car manufacturers are very slow to change. I tried to broker an automotive GPS deal between a major Japanese company and a big US automotive supplier in the 80s. Was pretty much tarred and feathered by the US company. Except for Tesla it’s a very stodgy and inbred business.

It's not just the CPU's that need power. You also need power for all the cameras and other sensors and cooling for the CPU's. My understanding is that when you add up all the power demands, you can't do it with an ICE car. Maybe it work if you could attach a huge ass alternator to an ICE car, but that would probably reduce your gas mileage enough to be pointless when EV's exist.

I really question that. My Audi Q7 is capable of limited self driving. It has multiple cameras and can steer itself. It's autonomous in low speed traffic but requires that you keep your hands on the wheel at speed. It cannot navigate itself and has an IQ of 10 compared to the Tesla. However, it has multiple camera, computers, etc. My Tesla has a detailed energy analysis function which I have not used. I will check it to see if it can illuminate the non-propulsive power function. Powering 1kW of electronics from an alternator is not a problem. That is only 1.3 hp.
