Sends me 80 page stock purchase agreement at 9:30 pm and asks for markups that night. I miss one incorrect cross reference.

Partner makes additional revisions to my version, sends to other side.

Partner criticizes me in the morning for not paying attention to detail and missing a cross reference at 10pm.

Meanwhile, partner's revision (sent to client and other side)has a big typo made by him. Lol this is like an XO flame. Law may actually be the worst profession on the planet.

You're a junior level associate, right? 1/3 of the revenue that you generate for the firm is based on glorified secretarial work (editing documents, fixing section references, organizing exhibits, etc.). You have to be able to do that stuff without making mistakes. If the client would just "hire a secretary" to do that work, you wouldn't have anything to do.

Opposite ratio here. 1 of 4 was good, but the partner monopolized her with all kinds of personal business that his stay-at-home-wife apparently couldn't be bothered with, plus he likes to boss people around. I don't trust mine to do anything other than handle FedEx labels and to get me numbered tabs. Word Processing runs my changes, and I interface with Office Services directly for print jobs (or increasingly try to get juniors to do it).

I'm at this weird place where I increasingly don't give a shit because of how little much of what I do matters, but also trust people less and less.

That is the worst part of law. Partners don't hold themselves to their own standards. I used to work for a typo screamer. Every time there was a typo he'd come in and get red in the face and yell at people and say it was unacceptable and give you this whole lecture. Then you would look at his work and he would have typos, every single time.

Obviously dickish behavior, but I don't think it's unreasonable for a partner to expect an associate to focus more on detail than the partner does himself. I've worked with one or two partners who clearly think that's how it should work, and it can be fine so long as their not dicks, though you also have to be careful to keep their trust.

Um, no, that's not how it should work. If the partner is going to send out sloppy shit to the client, the associates should be able to as well. You shouldn't demand a higher quality level of work from your subordinates than you do yourself.

That's fair, assuming we're talking about similar types of work product. But there can be a uniform standard for quality that still involves delegation of most of the details to associates (e.g., the partner can give an associate a rough markup/draft with an expectation that the associate will catch drafting errors/typos).

My experience has been that those types of partners basically deploy spot checking. If they don't find reason to doubt that you are on top of everything, they feel more comfortable letting you spot issues/handle substantive stuff. But if they find a couple errors, they freak out because they haven't been paying attention.

I just started a biglaw job a month ago. On two separate occasions I've corrected the partner who hired me when he started criticizing me for shit I didn't do. We traveled across the country last week and I was booked at the wrong hotel and had to fix it after we already got out there. He started laying into me about how I need to check with his secretary about where we're staying. After talking to my secretary I learned partner was at the first hotel until a few days ago and changed it without saying anything. He mentioned this shit a second time and I said "actually my secretary did check with yours. You were staying at that hotel until s couple days ago and nobody said anything to me." This was in front of another partner and there was a good 45 second awkward silence. I'll probably be fired within a year.
