MLK Jr is a fairly minor figure in American history, why does he get his own day

If you were to write down a list of the most significant Americans, he probably wouldn't crack the top ten thousand.
Even granting recency bias, so limiting it to people in the 20th century, he might maybe crack the top thousand.
So what happened?

The US was re-founded in the 1960s. MLK is a founding father of the modern state.
See Christopher Caldwell, The Age of Entitlement.

the Italians paid their dudes and got Columbus Day for their efforts.
King did and said a lot of great things and African-Americans certainly paid their dues and got a holiday for their overall dues and for the Civil Rights movement too, which was massively important.
tbf, Juneteenth is founded on a more seminal event (end of slavery following a civil war) and the elite African-Americans have worked endlessly to recast King away from the persona that made him so important. still, King Day is well earned.
