Hunter Biden, during an interview with YouTube host Andrew Callaghan released on Monday, said his father, former President Joe Biden, was taking the sleep aid Ambien and suggested that could have been to blame for his disastrous debate against Donald Trump that ultimately resulted in him stepping away from his re-election bid.

"I'll tell you what, I know exactly what happened in that debate. He flew around the world, basically, and the mileage that he could have flown around the world three times. He's 81 years old. He's tired as s***. They give him Ambien to be able to sleep. He gets up on stage and he looks like he's a deer in the headlights. And it feeds into f****** story that anybody wants to tell," Hunter Biden said on the YouTube show "Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan."

Hunter Biden later told ABC News' Jonathan Karl he was not saying that his father was taking Ambien immediately before the debate -- he was making a point about his travel schedule in the weeks before the debate.

"I have no idea whether or not he used Ambien while traveling through multiple times zones in the weeks leading up to the debate. My point was that his debate performance was completely out of character then and now, he said."

The former president's team declined to comment to ABC News.

Hunter Biden continued to forcefully push back on any assertion that there was some sort of cover-up of his father's condition, and said that progressives rushed to his father's side to laud his agenda in the fallout of that debate. He claimed that, at first, Nancy Pelosi was the lone voice doubting Joe Biden's place on the Democratic ticket.

"If this was a conspiracy … somehow the entirety of a White House in which you literally living on top of each other has kept their mouth shut, about, you know…and what's the conspiracy? That Joe Biden got old? Yeah, he got old. He got old before our eyes," Hunter Biden said.

He continued: "The people that came out against him were who? Nobody, except Speaker Pelosi, emeritus. Speaker Emeritus Pelosi did not give a full-throated endorsement, which allowed everyone else to go 'Ok.' Except who came out full-throated? Progressives, AOC, Bernie, the entire progressive wing. Ro Khanna. The entire progressive side of the Democratic Party said Joe Biden has got more of our agenda accomplished in four years than any president in history."

Pelosi's office declined to comment to ABC News.

A suspect was never identified by the Secret Service.

"There's this conflation people have. I mean, I think they're opening up an investigation to cocaine that was found in a cubby outside the West Wing of the White House," Hunter Biden said.

Hunter Biden said that since the incident occurred while his father was president, he was immediately targeted.

"They're literally going to do an FBI -- another congressional investigation because they're convinced themselves that it had to be me. That there was a little tiny … I guess my point of view on bringing it up is that, no, I have been clean and sober since June of 2019, and I have not touched a drop of alcohol or drug and I'm incredibly proud of that," Hunter Biden said.

He denied that the drugs were his.

"Why would I bring cocaine to the White House, stick it into a cubby outside the situation room in the West Wing? When I wasn't there anyway. I mean, who the f*** knows?" Hunter Biden said.

Hunter Biden then said he found it ironic that he was questioned about his drug and alcohol addiction by former Rep. Matt Gaetz during closed-door dispositions on Capitol Hill, as Gaetz was also embroiled in drug and sex scandals.

"I demanded that they do it in public, and they refused .... Matt Gaetz, of all people, was giving me s*** about my drug use. I said, 'Really? All the people at this table, you're going to talk to me about my addiction and my alcoholism?'" Hunter Biden said.

In a statement to ABC News, Gaetz responded, "It is a real shame that the Republican Congress never issued a subpoena to Hunter Biden for live testimony in public. It’s also still troubling to me that Republicans in congress allowed Hunter to testify absent the video recording we usually make of witnesses. These would have been great moments for the country to see. The transcripts don’t do them justice. Hunter tried to use references to his drug use to avoid accountability for his international shake down business. I hope he’s enjoying his pardon."

Hunter Biden spoke with Callaghan for over three hours in a wide-ranging conversation.

-ABC News' Will Steakin contributed to this report.

Along with discussing his father's debate performance, Hunter Biden also denied that the bag of cocaine found in the White House complex back in 2023 belonged to him.

Hunter Biden blamed the sleeping pill Ambien for then-President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last year.

The younger Biden made the remarks in an expletive-laden interview on YouTube's "Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan" that was released Monday, the one year anniversary of his father's decision to drop out of the presidential race.

"I know exactly what happened in that debate. He flew around the world basically [and the?] mileage that he could have flown around the world three times, he’s 81 years old, he’s tired as s---, they give him Ambien to be able to sleep, he’s gets up on the stage and he looks like he’s a deer in the headlights," Hunter Biden said in the interview.

"And it feeds into every f---ing story that anybody wants to tell."

The former president's office declined to comment.

The elder Biden had previously blamed exhaustion for his debate performance, but had not mentioned any sleeping aid.

“I decided to travel around the world a couple of times … shortly before the debate,” he said at a campaign fundraiser in McLean, Virginia, days after the debate.

“I didn’t listen to my staff … and then I almost fell asleep onstage,” he quipped.

In the weeks before the debate, Biden went to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day and then returned to the U.S. before he departed for the Group of Seven Summit in Italy. He then attended a Los Angeles fundraiser on June 15 — 12 days before the debate.

He also spent several days at Camp David, Maryland, preparing for his showdown with Donald Trump.

Aides had also previously blamed Biden's debate performance on a cold.

In the same Channel 5 interview, Hunter Biden also rebuked several prominent Democrats who had called for his father to drop out of the race following the debate — including actor George Clooney.

"F--- him and f--- everyone around him," Biden said.

He also denied that he was responsible for a bag of cocaine that was discovered in a highly trafficked part of the West Wing in 2023.

In May, Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino announced the bureau was reopening the probe into the discovery earlier this year. Trump suggested in an interview earlier this year that "either Hunter or Joe" was responsible.

"They've convinced themselves it had to be me," the younger Biden, who has spoken extensively about his drug addiction and struggles to get sober, told Callaghan.

"I have been clean and sober since June of 2019, and I have not touched a drop of alcohol or a drug and I'm incredibly, incredibly proud of that," he added.

Hunter Biden claims mystery White House cocaine was NOT his in 'craziest interview ever'

Joe Biden's son Hunter has claimed a mystery bag of cocaine found in the White House was not his in a bizarre, sprawling new interview.

Just weeks after the FBI confirmed it would reopen its probe into the bag - found during the Biden presidency - Hunter sat down for a three-hour-long podcast chat.

The ex-President's son, 55, has endured struggles with substance abuse in the past - sparking speculation that the white powder may have been his.

Now, in a new interview with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, who teased it as his "craziest ever", Hunter has broken his silence.

"I have not touched a drop of alcohol or a drug, and I'm incredibly proud of that,” Hunter said.

"Why would I bring cocaine into the White House and stick it into a cubby outside of the situation room in the West Wing?"

55-year-old Hunter Biden also opened up on his history with drugs during the hours-long grilling

The 55-year-old also opened up on his history with drugs during the hours-long grilling.

"I was drinking so much alcohol... almost a handle of vodka a day," he admitted.

"And alcohol is the most destructive drug, not just to your body, but it puts you in more danger than any other drug that I've ever experienced."

He revealed: "And then you add on top of that the amount of crack that I was using at the time.

"Crack cocaine, in terms of your physical health, is not as dangerous as the situation that you put yourself in to be able to obtain it."

Last year, the former 'First Son' was found guilty of three felony gun charges

Last year, the former "First Son" was found guilty of three felony gun charges after he lied about his substance use in a background check.

His father, in one of his final acts as President, handed Hunter a full pardon in December 2024 - throwing out both his gun conviction and a potential sentence.

The cocaine was found over the July 4 holiday weekend in 2023 - in an area which hundreds of people could have accessed, according to the White House.

But investigators closed their probe after just 10 days over a "lack of evidence".

Hunter was handed a full pardon in December 2024

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said this May that his agency would be looking into cases with "potential public interest", including the cocaine.

As well as the drugs, Bongino is looking into a series of pipe bombs laid near both the Democratic and Republican party headquarters the night before the January 6 chaos.

His team is also exploring a leaked preview of the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade and bring an end to abortion.

"I receive requested briefings on these cases weekly and we are making progress," Bongino said in May - and has urged the American public to send in tips.
