protests: almost non-existent. you'd think from watching the media that the entire country is on fire, lit with anger. no sign of it. saw maybe a dozen Palestinian protestors in different spots across the whole week, and a small pro-life vigil of maybe a dozen that stood at the main exit at times.

scale: it was freaking huge. much bigger than i remember Cleveland being in 2016. several blocks, most of downtown, fenced off. three entire stadiums commandeered - one apparently for operations, one dedicated to media booths for doing talking head panels, and then the main one for the convention itself.

security: surprisingly light, considering someone had tried to kill DJT immediately before. a light mag scan to get into the grounds and after that very little beyond rent-a-cops casually glancing at the color of your badge if you wanted to go somewhere fancy. was able to wander right up to people like Vance and Hogan. never saw Trump in the wild.

the city: i've never seen Milwaukee cleaner. very few homeless people about. everything scrubbed to a shine. on the other hand, it seemed to be deadly for downtown business. i am sure city administration sold this as a huge economic boost, but no chance. people went from their car/shuttle bus directly into the secure zone and left again. unless you were one of the few stores or restaurants within the fence, or in a hotel lobby, you were mostly DEAD empty the entire week.

speeches: many very boring, but i assume targeted to appeal to some group or be cut into ads. the highlights were obviously Hogan, Tucker, and then the black pastor from Detroit. the pastor was great because you could see the teleprompters, and he completely ignored his prepared speech and provided an amazing show.

the people: 10% delegates, 10% activists, 40% media, 40% lobbyists. im not important and can't do anything for anyone, but was able to latch onto a group with a lobbyist buying food and drink for every meal.

the mood: very upbeat. one area where it suffered in comparison to 2016 was just the lack of zany energy. in 2016 you would see Cenk Uygur fighting with Milo in a media booth in the hallway. Roger Stone or Alex Jones screaming insults at someone in the hallway. The Duck Dynasty guys wandering around. whatever. this year, the internet media was segregated into a separate building. a lot of wackos like Milo just seemed absent. and the minor political celebs like Stone or todays version of the Duck Dynasty crew spent their time hidden away warming seats in one of the lounges. i don't know if this was intentional, but it took away a bit of the fun.

the process: there was no process. in contrast to 2016 when there were floor games being played, the actual convention business happened in minutes and the rest was show.

the swag: maga hats now $47. everyone expects one as a gift when you get back. donald trump has left me bankrupt. i guess this is how they pay to keep the lights on.
