It splattered everywhere and several people gasped. We had to carefully step around the mess as a lesbian "barista" went to get some paper towels. Then this other tattooed roastie handed me my scalding hot coffee with no lid. I stood there like a fag awkwardly trying to get a flimsy lid on my cup as others stared and judged me for being incompetent. I'm not going back to that place any time soon, believe me. Date: November 14th, 2024 10:52 PM Author: average/ordinary/typical citizen/person I went to the Panera Bread across the street from my office for my customary Napa Almond chicken salad pick 2 and mid day bottle of water, which they have a private label brand I am quite fond of. In any case, when I went in there was only 1 young woman working the checkout register by the bakery section. As every Panera Bread patron knows, they have a bakery section for pastry products and the other checkout section for their actual meals. *Important to the story is you cannot see the lunch food menu from the bakery section because it's around the L shaped countertop posted on the wall above the food registers... So I naturally grab my bottle of water from the display refrigerator and go to the food countertop to look at the menu and place a lunch order. But there's no one there. At this time a handful of other people walk in and que up in the existing bakery line only a couple people deep. I still wait there for a few minutes expecting someone to come assist me. But no one does. Then I see the people who came in AFTER me in the bakery line have moved up to the register and are placing their order. While this was happening I made direct EYE CONTACT with at least 3 women behind the counter making sandwiches, clearly indicating someone should come ask what I need. Instead there I am standing by myself at the register making eye contact like a maniac with every employee who refuses to come help me. Anyways by the time everyone who came in after me has ordered at the bakery and 10 more people show I up I finally say something to the sandwich woman asking if someone can take my order and she curtly responds "Sorry, they're training on the other register and thats the only one open right now." But I'm EXTREMELY flustered and I say "I'm not going anywhere I'm staying right here until someone takes my order." She looked at me puzzled but then just went back to making her sandwich down the food line. But I was determined to make my point. I stood there by myself for no less than 10 minutes as people awkwardly ignored and walked around me, likely because they could sense my short fuse anger building. When the bakery line was exhausted I decided to crack and walk over and explain what happened and the two women behind the counter looked at me like I was a crazy person despite me clearly telling them it's store policy to order lunch from the lunch counter and that customers can't even see the lunch menu from the bakery and they STILL just looked at me blank faced except I know I saw the trainee chick smile for some reason while I was explaining this all to her. I finally make my lunch order and say I would also like a coffee for my inconvenience, which was a fine face-saving compromise for all parties and the woman says sure and adds the coffee to my check and at that point I lose it and BOLDLY say "No, I want a complimentary cup of coffee for being forced to stand in the other line for half and hour" and she was like " Uhhh, I need to ask my manager." But here is where the story really comes apart, a black janitor guy mopping the floor behind the counter hears me say this and is like "This honkie wants a free Coffee?!" in a tone and voice I can only describe how Chris Rock would say it during a classic 90s stand up routine, and the two young women start giggling. He's clearly some sort of class clown joker of the group and has the other employees in a laughing spell. So I say "sir, excuse me" and then he drops his mop and is like "uhh sir...sir... Hello excuse me sir I'm a white business man and would like to place an order with your manager...uh" in the exact same voice that Dave Chappelle does when he played that white guy and wore "whiteface" makeup. Well at this point the two women at the bakery counter are doubling over laughing and one literally hits her head on the cash register and comes back gasping for air between laughs while she and her friend hold onto each other. Now I see this isn't going the direction I hoped for and have to get back to my biglaw office for a call with underwriters counsel, so I meekly thank them for their time and leave two dollars on the counter for the bottle of water and leave but as I'm walking I see the black janitor popping and locking using his broom stick as some kind of dance prop, spinning it around his shoulders and everyone in the store is applauding him and taking videos with their smart phones.
