if youre talking about actual skilled jobs like driving or maintaining a boat? then yeah they respect them. if youre talking about corporate jobs then who cares its just another resume line same as navy.

It's lulzy when you see military resumes and they all mention the BUDGET they worked with like you're supposed to be impressed at overseeing bloated waste of your tax dollars

I applied for a gov't job once and they asked me what was the biggest budget I'd ever overseen. I told them (knowing it was substantially less than this department), and then said "but a budget is a budget you know - just a little bigger"

they did NOT like that answer

i'd imagine for officers it's pretty good, especially if your career involves interacting with rich dudes who own boats and shit. cg actually operates lots of 'normal' sized vessels in similar ports / waters that yachts roam in. the number of people in the navy that do actual shit that at all relates conventional boating/sailing is minimal

about the same. you're still a veteran with all the hiring benefits. If you do your 25, full pension. can go work for a contractor afterwards

they can make fucking bank piloting ships through harbors. i imagine this totally depends on what you did in the coast guard though. if you were a paper pusher then its whatever, best bet is probably going bigfed to cop that veteran's preference. private probably thinks of them as navy light.

isn't all that harbor master / local piloting thing usually some weird profession that is guarded away by families/locals and exclusively passed along?

i'm sure it has its local mafiosos but there probably just aren't enough of these guys licensed and abled to really corner it. pretty hard to come by that experience outside of the military.
