corruption, gambling and probably the nfl

fundamentally boxing isn't the best spectator sport, you have to believe in your guy and if half the fights seem shady and you can't even trust it enough to bet on its going to kind of suck, once the nfl really blew up it took over the violent beer swilling tv watching demo and boxing just faded away

I have a hard time believing the salaries thing when boxing still pays like crazy for the top cards

99.999% of the boxing money goes to the top 0.0001% of boxers. might have been a little less lopsided in boxing's heyday but it's still an absurd split.

boxing can't really be career, it's an amateur martial art where a few people at the top get paid to put on a show. meanwhile you can just be a part of your HS baseball team without having to take a literal beating and if you happen to be good you just keep going and see where it goes, maybe you turn it into a good living.

anyways i made that third on my list for a reason. other two factors were bigger.

but that is the case for other sports too, the beating part is the difference although not with football, look at the ncaa over the last few decades, tens of thousands of doods played for nothing

you can be the 125th best starting pitcher in the world, in a world where other aspiring baseball players might not be competing with you to be a starting pitcher, and carve out a decent 8 year career and at an average annual salary of high seven figs. maybe a retarded GM signs you to a multi year deal before you flame out and you keep raking in cash after you're useless.

if you top out as the 20th best boxer in your weight class you're probably not raking in a ton, and if you lose a couple of fights you're fucked.

it's not even as good as golf or tennis where you still get to compete against the #1 player at the masters or US open on the biggest stage. your stage will never be the biggest stage until you are yourself the biggest draw.

It’s similar to the nba. Tyson Holyfield II was the same time Michael Jordan left the NBA and the ratings tanked. People were just like “idgaf about the underlying sport, just the mega stars.”
