Left my apartment late, hoping the night would be quieter. It wasn’t. The usual sounds of sirens and distant shouting filled the air. Passed by a boarded-up coffee shop with "Help Wanted" scrawled on the plywood in fading Sharpie. Help won’t come.
Crossed the park where someone had set a trash can on fire. A couple sat nearby, warming their hands like it was a campfire. I almost envied them.
Stopped at a gas station for a stale donut. The cashier didn’t even look up as I paid, just mumbled, “Have a good one.” I won’t.
On the way back, a streetlight above me flickered and died. I stood there for a moment, staring into the dark, then kept walking. What’s the point?
Got home, sat on the floor, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
