It was great imo. The direction is something that resonates with me, where basically the actors are instructed to deliver their lines flat and deadpan which means you don’t have to suffer through overwrought “emotional” scenes that are designed to manipulate the viewer. It’s like a modern absurdist take on a Greek tragedy but with the requisite nihilism to make it feel genuine and true to the great Nothing that is contemporary existence. Most people will absolutely hate it which is how you know it is Good imo.

OYT’s interpretation is merely a superficial engagement with its deeper ontological connotations. To merely label the film as "Good" based on its polarizing effect is to overlook the intricate palimpsest of philosophical and aesthetic traditions it engages with. A more discerning analysis reveals it as an interstitial work, poised between shallow affectation and profound, albeit oblique, metaphysical inquiry.

FWIW, the director’s insistence on an affectless performance style might evoke the Brechtian alienation effect, but this comparison belies a more intricate subtextual apparatus at play. Consider, fwiw, the esoteric reference to Eugène Green's "La Sapienza," wherein the architect's quest for clarity parallels the film’s narrative structure, aligning with Parmenides' vision of an unchanging universe, thus rendering the human attempt to impose meaning as both tragic and futile. This existential futility echoes the unresolved paradoxes in Alain Resnais’ "Last Year at Marienbad," where memory and identity dissolve into an inescapable temporal labyrinth imho. Furthermore, the invocation of a "modern absurdist take on a Greek tragedy" demands a nuanced examination vis-à-vis the oeuvre of Corneliu Porumboiu. In "Police, Adjective," the deliberate mundanity transcends mere stylistic choice, gesturing towards the hermeneutic void that epitomizes late modernity. The purported nihilism in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," therefore, can be seen as derivative, merely a pastiche lacking the genuine philosophical depth found in Tarkovsky's contemplative silences in "Stalker” imho.

Moreover, the audience's divided reception as an indicator of quality recalls the contentious reception of Straub-Huillet’s films afaik. Yet, this binary judgment simplifies the multifaceted dialogic engagement necessary for appreciating the layers of intertextuality and subversion in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer." It is not simply the nihilistic veneer but the dialectic between Apollonian form and Dionysian chaos that one must grapple with, akin to the disquieting harmonies in György Ligeti's "Requiem." But, take my opinion fwiw. After all, I know nothing of Film 😏

Of course you, a fuckin’ philistine, are bringing Income into this. One might recall the words of Zbigniew Herbert, who, in his "Elegy of Fortinbras," articulates the vacuity of material triumphs juxtaposed against the enduring resonance of intellectual and artistic pursuits. Your jest, while ostensibly humorous, inadvertently underscores a tragicomic reflection on the limitations of our contemporary valuation systems, reminiscent of the ouroboros in Jodorowsky's "The Holy Mountain," perpetually consuming its own tail in a Sisyphean cycle of self-negation. Reminds me of your Hair’s self-negation, btw, champ.

I watched Poor Things (2023) last night which is by the same director with a tedious Greek name. It was really entertaining and extremely sexually explicit, highly recommended. It is on Hulu which is the worst of the streaming services but I get it for free via AMEX imo.

Paramount and Peacock suck also but they barely even count, just some Hollywood studio boomer executives' last grasp at relevance, they barely know what the fuck they're doing. Hulu is actively trying to compete with Netflix by funding micro-budget slop with barely passable actors, plus you can't even skip the intro on TV shows which means they lack Engineering prowess.
