They've been re-doing our offices over the last year, one floor at a time. I moved onto a new floor a few months ago. The whole aesthetic of the remodel is light and bright. It's nice. The carpet is kind of an off-white color with streaks of bright greens, blues, oranges, reds, etc. It looks good, but the off-white parts, which are probably more than half the surface area, really shows stains.

As part of the remodel, they replaced all of the large, thick, sturdy old coffee mugs with tiny, dainty little coffee cups. People kept filling the tiny cups to the brim and making frequent trips to the coffee machines with predictable results. People spill coffee on the rug and it gets stained.

So, they put little plastic to-go coffee cup lids that almost kind of fit the dainty little coffee mugs by all the coffee machines. HR has been blasting emails that all mugs must have a lid any time they're not on your desk or in the coffee/kitchen area.

Today, I was standing outside my office sipping my coffee while talking to the guy in the office next to mine. The deputy director of HR walked by and told me I needed a lid. I told her I was just standing there and the cup was half empty. She told me the policy is you need a lid and she would wait until I got one. When my office neighbor and I saw she was serious, we retired to our respective offices.

Minutes later, I got a "written warning" in our HR software system and a meeting notice on my calendar for an in-person meeting with her, another HR person, and my practice group chair, who is leaving tonight for a two week vacation in Europe.

So basically you've been fucking off too much with the socializing in the hallway and have irritated someone sufficiently to do this whole pretextual lid thing with you.

Why does the firm have a "deputy director of HR" and why should say care if a talk to a colleague in the hall for a few minutes in the morning?

She asked others how you are doing and they said you spend too much time socializing and too little time working.

She thinks she is doing you a favor by breaking up the chit-chat and hopes that you will catch the hint.
