The most interesting part of the film was the off-camera stuff. The movie was based off a book where the author wrote under a pseudonym and was eventually outed as a former KKK leader and segregationist speech writer of George Wallace. Furthermore, Philip Kaufman, who was Jewish, wrote and directed the film but then clashed with Eastwood, calling the tone of the film “fascist”; Eastwood had Kaufman fired and took on directing duties himself. Eastwood and Kaufman were also both competing romantically for the same woman, Sondra Locke, who co-starred in the film and later went on to have a decades-long relationship with Eastwood even though both were nominally married. Sondra Locke went on to star in many movies with Eastwood, benefiting hugely from their romantic relationship, even as she financially supported her homosexual legal husband. She also had multiple abortions by Eastwood and then later tried to blame him for them after they broke up, even though it was clearly her decision (Eastwood had many children from many other women so forcing women into abortion doesn’t seem like his M.O.).
