The last time I was there it felt like some kind of guided tour of North Korea. It's at once a Midwestern prole trap and a billionaire's playground. It's corporate, soulless, and devoid unless you are one of the richest people in the world and then you get to dine on food made from the rarest ingredients, own the world's most prized paintings, and lord it all over everyone that you won and they didn't. It's the most brutally unequal ode to hypercapitalism while also being intensely prole, overrated, and full of genuinely ugly people, inside and out.
It's been 25 years since New York was anywhere near the center of the cultural zeitgeist. It's just a monument to wealth and excess you can never be a part of, unless you follow all of the little academic steps into the white collar escalator and then you can be a back of house minder for one of the world's wealthiest Jews.
Not sure whom any of this is for but it's not for anyone normal. Sociopaths, sycophants, and marks need apply.
