champion free and offensive speech, denigrate the Bushes and the Cheneys, build a multiracial coalition of the working class, ride the enthusiastic youth vote, be despised by the military industrial complex, and appoint Kennedys to major positions?

2003 Dems ecstatic

That's nice and all. And you're not the first person to say this. But can someone explain why I should give a flying fuck what "2003 Dems" think?

Like who made these people from 20 years ago the moral arbiters of the earth- especially considering what happened to 2003 Dems within the next decade.

If you exclude the machinations of the neoliberal elite that continued to drive the party leftwards and into increasingly bizarre territory in the decades following, the political consensus at the time was sustainable and broaching on issues that the people of the polity actually cared about

Most of us have fond memories of those times, and rightfully so. There's also some common knowledge that the issues being touched upon were sidelined for more of the idpol stuff that defined the following Obama terms, and I think many of us just want the Dem party to get back on track with the sorts of left policies that defined the era, most of which benefited and served the people of the nation far more than what the Dems are offering today

The average XO or was between the ages of 18 and 20 at that time. I don't think it's any mystery why we are likely to over romanticize it

I love you all like brothers, but this thread is the equivalent of a YouTube comment by a boomer saying they don't make music like they did in 1967 anymore!

It'd be more like what artists, writers, researchers, designers, etc do when they study a period to see what worked and what didn't with hopes of extracting something worth applying to today. The mid-2000s are having a moment in the consciousness of the public atm and if there's mass nostalgia there are usually good reasons why

It's one thing to sit down with your joint and say "Ehhh those were good times man" *cough cough* and another thing entirely to discuss something specific about it relevant to today

Beyond people and their personal &immediate testimonies there are other ways of "typing" periods

Cultural artifacts, media (lots of this with the advent of digital video and services like Youtube), historical records, and more. Anthropology isn't just for far off cultures for far off times

They were, by all accounts, good times. The political consensus was rich, and while you still had that "uniparty" effect there was far more effective push/pull within it

It seems fine. There's a lot of stuff that needs to be cleaned out w/r/t government. It isn't working, it's unnatural to the polity, and it's harming a lot of people immensely

There are concerns about some of his supporters, and the messaging they're sending to our own citizens, but I think that's going to settle down very soon.
