It honestly probably applies to most walks of life - even law. A Harvard kid is probably infinitely smarter than a BU law grad.
But if the BU law grad hustles and gets big law and works hard and the Harvard kid goes and does research, 10 years later the BU kid maybe has people fighting over him to pay him $1 mm a year to run deals and the Harvard kid can't go to those same people and say "hire me instead I'm much smarter."
