Works for developing countries. For developed countries w/ excess production we'd rather have the global markets. Tbf that doesn't necessarily make YOU richer, just the ones running the show.
In any case though, you need a careful protectionism. protectionism in korea worked b/c they didnt put tariffs onn all goods imported, just the ones they knew were competing against them in the global markets. When Argentina tried protectionism as part of their Import substitution industrialization the result (ofc can't disregard the political instability from 1930-1980) was that they went from a T10 country to a literal shithole.
