Japan will still be rich as fuck when you die. They deliberately play the "we're so poor" card so we won't have more trade wars with them.

Yeah, I was in SK in the 1990s and you couldn't find a non Korean car anywhere on the street or buy non-Korean electronics in any department store because imports were taxed so heavily they might as well have had the death penalty for selling them. Only American shit you could buy was green giant canned corn and spam.

CR. Driving a Mercedes was suuuch a huge deal in Korea b/c you're paying at least twice the amount you would in the US.

Works for developing countries. For developed countries w/ excess production we'd rather have the global markets. Tbf that doesn't necessarily make YOU richer, just the ones running the show.

In any case though, you need a careful protectionism. protectionism in korea worked b/c they didnt put tariffs onn all goods imported, just the ones they knew were competing against them in the global markets. When Argentina tried protectionism as part of their Import substitution industrialization the result (ofc can't disregard the political instability from 1930-1980) was that they went from a T10 country to a literal shithole.

emerging economies need to engage in protectionism in order to foster their nascent industries. this is common. the U.S. did this as well in the late 19th century when it was emerging as an industrial power. tariffs were actually one of the most important campaign issues back then.
