The US is overpopulated & would be much nicer with 100 million fewer residents

technology/automation + resources per capita would result in a really nice country at that population level or thereabouts. the golden zone for the US landmass is probably 200 to 250 million, which is enough labor to maintain a high level of production while not cutting the pie into thinner and thinner slices.
this is so obvious, but it has almost no representation in 'the discourse.' it's completely off-the-table in any sort of mainstream forum.

no; there are relatively hard limits on things like how much energy (from all sources/inputs/outputs) will go to any median individual when you have too many individuals. 340-something million people in the US is already leading to issues like land-strain where a lot of people can't even afford houses with yards anymore. that's a direct QOL hit.

what does this have to do with anything? if you want more resources per capita, one way to start doing that is to reduce the number of population which is being capitated in the first place. obviously a measure like 'wealth inequality' is going to get shittier when your country tries to import large chunks of the third world.

there are plenty of houses bro, they're just being hoarded by corporations (BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street) and billionaires
"Over 15 million American homes — approximately 10% of the country’s housing inventory — were vacant in 2022."

"Large institutions owned roughly 5% of the 14 million single-family rentals nationally in early 2022, according to analysts.
By 2030, the institutions may hold some 7.6 million homes, or more than 40% of all single-family rentals on the market, according to the 2022 forecast by MetLife Investment Management."

yeah i agree
i think the most convincing irl evidence of this is the number of people in national and state parks and campgrounds. when i was growing up, these were populated with comfortable numbers of people, and visiting them was generally a very pleasant experience
now, they are absolutely packed all the time. like completely packed to a gross and shocking degree. yeah, the demographic makeup is disgusting too. but just the sheer numbers of people crowding these public areas is ridiculous
it really feels like there are 2x as many people here as there were when i was a kid. that may actually be the real number. i would not be shocked at all
