As you already know, Radiation Show is 180 and a Triumph. It was as good as everyone said it was.

My favorite episode was the first one. I really enjoyed the thrill and panic of the core exploding and everyone getting irradiated and dying horribly. The tension was great. They really crushed it. All of the disturbing radiation shit was the most fun part of the season.

I didn't care as much for the political intrigue and the courtroom procedural stuff although it was done very well it was just kind of boring and I was running out of steam. I'm glad that they limited it to 5 episodes and didn't bore everyone to death.

My hot take is that I felt a certain nostalgia for the society these people lived in. Obviously it would be gay as fuck to live in a country where the government could lie to you and you could get killed as a result, or you could get disappeared for telling the truth. But at the same time all these people lived in a society with immense purpose and connection to their community that our society has completely lost. I actually wanted to be a Ruskie fag living in the 80s even if it meant living on rice and beans or whatever they ate and driving a car that didn't work. I think there was something beautiful about it. I met a guy from Georgia once who told me that Tblisi in the 70s absolutely slapped. He said the best thing about living in the Soviet Union is that you never had to worry about your wife leaving you or cheating on you because they were so conditioned to being devoted to their man. He said he never once worried about her running off to get dicked down by BBC. He said cheating and divorce were unthinkable to Soviet women.

Seems like it was a simple life. Not based on cucking and wage slavery. Yeah your house sucked but so did everyone else's. Seemed kinda nice. I get why they were all passionate about their crappy little Commie society and why they still haven't ever Westernized.

The first episode did a great job of showing what a shitshow it all was. The geiger counters not going high enough to properly measure. Forcing the worker to look INTO the leaking core just to verify it was exposed. So well done.

it's a great show because this is just how it works in every large institution. there were many cassandras leading up to ITE. most of the time people will dismiss doomsayers because listening to them means immediate pain. we're wired to pretend like everything is cool until it's not.

Cr. If you're a naysayer to something that's already going well people look at you like you're being an asshole. But the greater the consequences the more skeptical you have to be. If you're bullish on GC slop like Snow White and it fails nobody dies. A big company might lose a little money and have to use some tax trickery for a while, but it's not life or death. Soviet bureaucracy cutting corners and promoting people who were willing to do evil to get ahead was always going to lead to something like Chernobyl. That was the problem, when working harder doesn't get you ahead things get really weird. People only do as much work as they have to. 200 million people who had all quiet quit.

That being said I think I would like the place now. It's probably alright.

yeah. and there's nothing about the soviet's that make that different here, except for the fact you can be disappeared for going against the grain.

most people go with the conventional wisdom all the time. and 99.9% it's the right thing to do. it takes a lot of bravery to go against it, as odds are you're wrong. and when the consequences of being wrong are extreme, like with the soviets, it's even less likely people will attempt to.

no one gets in trouble for doing what they're supposed to do, even if it's ruinous. most people keep their head down. that's why innovation and reform only comes from radicals.

I think a key efficiency of our system is that the radicals in our country are permanently attached to a megaphone churning out stupid ideas nonstop (like MiG and NSAM). Most of the time they're wrong, but sometimes they're Cassandras. And during Covid, the crazies were right. It's useful to society to have a radical backup plan. But it also invariably leads to a society ruled by fags and women pushing deracination, troons, and aspirational bath mats. So it's a balance, I guess. You win some you lose some.

im speaking to human nature, not any system of governance.

even in workplaces you often encounter "we do it that way because that's the way we do it" all the time. the consequences of coming out against the standard certainly impact how often people will attempt it. but in any system, most of the time people will go with the conventional wisdom than risk being wrong. people would rather fail doing the correct thing than taking a shot at doing something different.

If my employer had a motto it would be work harder, not smarter. If you think up a better way to do something they will get really mad at you. They despise organization, planning, cohesion, and efficiency. Why do that when you can just bark at people to try harder?

this is the essence of why "why did they do shit that was clearly not going to work?" is retarded. in any organization, small or massive, change is resisted and most people would rather slide and let do than get hassled.

The core was cool, that was the problem. Too much Xenon. That caused it to be unable to start back up once the wattage dipped too low. They couldn't get it going again so they removed almost all of the control rods. The failsafe was supposed to work but there was graphite tips on the boron rods because the Soviets were cheapskates, which caused the control pins to get stuck in place and cause a chain reaction. And boom goes the dynamite.

Didn't the Soviets have a bunch of legit female scientists? If I'm not mistaken they were relatively big on gender equality and women working. I think Lenin was down with career shrews. I know they made that exact character up but I've actually met PhD level former Soviet female scientists in real life. Not some crazy stretch of the imagination. At least there weren't any minorities.

yeah if you read about what actually happened the chick character is an amalgamation of many chicks.

imo tolerable "yas queen!" shit when a situation that involved thousands of actors needs to be reduced to a tight drama. at least she wasn't a brown transwoman depicted as the smartest person in the room only to be ignored by arrogant white men that piloted the disaster.

Cr. As far as I know the Reds were big on educating women and making them do jobs. In some of the more pastoral regions of the Eastern Bloc female education and labor participation was virtually zero before the Soviets showed up. It was part of their whole shtick to make women do shit. Everyone had a role in their project to convert the world to a society with no more strife.

It is probably fine as a commentary on late-Soviet society, but as a faithful depiction of actual people and events, it's a failure. Imagine a story about Covid where Anthony Fauci bravely speaks truth to power and reveals that the NIH funded the research that created the virus, knew it all along, and that the government measures were worthless bullshit. That could be a really compelling story, but it's absolutely outrageous in light of what the real Fauci did. This is basically what "Chernobyl" did for Valery Legasov. It's unfortunate that people are going to think this is real history

Could you please enlighten us on the Very Real True Story of Valery Legasov? In defense of the show I believe that they portrayed him the way he is portrayed in the West generally in all the biographical information I was able to find on him. If it went down some other way it's certainly not documented on Wikipedia. He won some posthumous Hero of the Federation awards and shit. I can't comment on how he is viewed over there but I am pretty sure he has a good reputation in their culture as well. Would be interested in hearing the other side of the story and your sources.

His primary accomplishment was lying to everyone; I don't know why anyone would consider him a hero. He also slandered the operators, who did nothing out of the ordinary for Soviet NPP operators. The things he tried to do to help were completely useless, like dumping boron and sand on the core, which did absolutely nothing except kill a chopper crew. This is unsurprising, since he was a chemist who had no business getting involved in matters of nuclear engineering
