NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in southern India said Saturday that they arrested two men in connection with allegations of gang rape of an Israeli and a local woman.

The Israeli and her homestay operator were stargazing along with three male travelers, an American and two Indians, in Koppal town in southern Karnataka state on Thursday night, police official Ram L. Arasiddi said.

According to an initial investigation, three men on a motorbike approached them while asking for money. Following arguments, the three men pushed the male travelers into a nearby water canal and sexually assaulted the women, Arasiddi said. One of the Indian tourists drowned and his body was recovered on Saturday. The American and another Indian swam to safety.

Koppal is about 350 kilometers (217 miles) from Bengaluru, India’s startup and technology powerhouse.

Arasiddi said police set up a special investigation team that arrested two out of the three suspects on Saturday. They were being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder, gang rape and robbery, he said.

The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify victims of sexual assault.

A group of Israeli tourists have been accused of attempting to rape a pair of Finnish women at a hotel in Phuket, Thailand, Thai and Russian media reported on Saturday.

However, Thai media later reported that two German nationals and a Turkish national were responsible after an investigation by Patong Police.

The police station reported an incident involving the assault of a foreign man on Saturday at 5:37 a.m. local time. The incident occurred near the Neptune Hotel on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road in Patong, Kathu District, Phuket.

The women were reportedly rescued from the attack by a Russian man named 44-year-old Alexander Belinsky, who was physically assaulted and later hospitalized by the three men. He is currently receiving treatment at Patong Hospital.

The Finnish women told police that they were in their room when three Israeli men barged in and tried to assault them. Belinsky was reportedly walking past the room when he noticed the alleged ongoing attack and intervened.

Identifying the suspects

The women alleged that during the morning of the incident, the men had followed them around the Patong Beach area and later to the hotel, according to Russian state media RIA.

After the police had investigated the incident, they went to the Lacaza Hotel on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road in Patong, where the suspects were confirmed to be staying.

The suspects were identified as Aksu Cemre Can, 30, Aksu Ali Cem, 22, and Yanyana Salman, 23. During questioning, the three admitted to the altercation, according to Thai media. They claimed they were only accompanying a Finnish woman back to her hotel after a night out when the Russian man, who said he was her boyfriend, confronted them.

"Since the homestay operator did not know them, she told them they had no money. When the men repeatedly insisted, one of the male tourists from Odisha gave them Rs 20. After that, the three men allegedly started arguing and threatened to bash their heads with stones," the complainant stated in the FIR.

When the group refused to give them more money, the accused, who spoke Kannada and Telugu, started abusing them.

Two of the attackers then held the homestay owner by the throat before sexually assaulting her. Another suspect raped the Israeli woman. The attackers then fled the spot with cellphones of the victims and Rs 9,500 in cash.

"Two of the accused beat the homestay operator, while the third aggressively pushed the three male tourists - Daniel Pitas, 23, from the USA, Pankaj Amrit Rao Patil, 43, from Nashik, and Bibash, 26, from Odisha - into the canal. The three accused also hit the homestay operator, leaving her seriously injured," the FIR added. While Pitas and Patil swam back to safety, Bibash's drowned. His body was found early Saturday in the canal around 2km from the spot.

The arrested have been identified as Mallesh and Chetan Sai. Both aged 21 years hail from Sai Nagara in Gangavathi town and work as masons.
