A 10% yield is eminently possible, and dividends are taxed much less than ordinary income. $100,000 in divs = freedom.

Why is this boart so obsessed with growth stocks when it's possible to kick back for a least a few years with this?

Maybe if I was single and had nobody to provide for I could kick back, relax, and be a bum with cheap hobbies and few expenses, but I have 4 children, a wife and all the trappings concomitant therewith: house, mortgage, two cars, kids all have bikes, furniture, appliances (some in working order), computers, televisions, iPhones, taxes, HOA fees, and the complete lack of time to keep it all properly managed.

While true, as divs are taxed much less you could surely do this for a few years at least and not be in huge trouble

Unless all your savings are in 401k/income deferred vehicles. In which case lmao

You wouldn't have to worry about taxes all that much. Think you can earn $70k ib divs tax free actually

please explain this sentence further im not sure what is happening

"And if the middle markets collapse, what do you think will happen to growth stocks?"

they will go down significantly. i believe the premise was something to the effect of you can retire on $1mm because you can consistently return 10% using this debt investment. i disagree with the second half of this premise

Very fair response, but obviously I was considering more than just $FSK. There are many others spread throughout this thread

If you believe in me friend I can help. But you doubt me, like Judas.

I do believe it is possible to achieve consistent 10% returns solely on dividends/distributions

I also believe it's possible to be out of work for a period of time and not have it really turn into a disaster with $1mm not in ordinary income trapped in a pretax joke scheme like a deferred income account

Usually when an equity has a high dividend yield, investors have a strong expectation that the dividends will decrease massively over time relative to inflation or that the equity will be wiped out by bankruptcy.

Hey retard, do you know how adjusting for inflation works?

While you mull that one over, let's talk about total returns. 36% total return...So $100 invested is now worth $136.

Meanwhile inflation in the past 5 years has been 34%. So that $136 is worth only $101.8 in 2020 dollars. That's 0.2% inflation-adjusted annualized return....so you could withdraw at most $2000 per year without burning through the capital. Would've done better with a high-yield CD or inflation-protected Treasuries.

Lmao so you're the type of loser who actually believes the hype of oooooo inflation so highhhhhhh without understanding we only said that shit to get Trump back into power. Powell lies in order to decrease poors spending

If you don't have a mortgage less than 3% sure that's a problem (i.e. bought in last 3 years) but all of the other shit like gas and food is meaningless

Stop sucking powell's tiny balls. "Inflation protected trasuries" go suck a dick

It's only at most 3% per year. I'd still have a decent gain after 5

The average net worth for a 65 year old - average not median - is $1,800,000k. This figure includes the upward skew of the wealthy. So it is impossible for there to be something that a person "needs" that requires much more than this, otherwise people would be dying left and right.

Median is $132k if you don't count home equity. If you do count home equity, the median is $364k. The mean (average) is $1.8M

Dementia Mom is single and has been a retiree for 8+ years now. She earns $4500/mo or thereabouts from Social Security and a couple annuity payouts. Her largest monthly expense is rent, which I believe is about $2300/mo. She doesn’t eat much and she doesn’t go anywhere so her other expenses are pretty modest even though rent takes up a big piece. I think she’s withdrawn all of $60,000-$80,000 from her IRA in the last 8 years. She last told me the balance was over $1,040,000. I’m trying to get her to get a financial plan from a paid investment professional and drop Fisher Investments which has been stealing $10k-14k from her each year for the last 15 years but she’s as stubborn as a mule and likes being raked over. I guess she finds it titillating.

Anyway, I bring this up because she’s a great example of a retiree that didn’t really need to save much at all for retirement.

Right, most people by that age realize thing doing sucks and just sit at home. Pretty easy to make it work.

Yeah. People really don’t appreciate how much you can save by not doing dumb financial things like home owning or thing doing. She also has a super low tax liability.

Financing a retirement does require SOME resources, but for every year extra you work, you’ll need less. Then, when you get rid of major expenses like dependent children or spouses, the single family home, maybe go down to one car, everything gets really cheap by comparison and it’s like living life on cheat mode.

If my wife and I were retirement age this year, I think our combined SS/Pension income would be about $145,000. With no kids and no POS SFH to pay for, this would probably cover all expenses and then some. So no real need to save anything for retirement. Retirement savings are more of a rainy day fund/life insurance.

Wow need her to drop Fisher fast friend

And you should do it instead of letting yourself be cucked by idiots

"Investment advisors" are universally idiots. Have you not worked with them? Seriously?

She needs to pay some guy to give her a plan of some sort that she can follow. I can’t be involved because she doesn’t trust me and I don’t want to underwrite her future if something goes wrong. If the money runs out, it runs out and she can go to the Medicare paid for home to die. I don’t give a rats ass. And I’m not going to listen to “I let you handle my investments and there’s not enough left!”

I have been telling her to leave Fisher and do a 3 fund portfolio for 10 years. I got her the bogleheads guide to investing, I sent her links to Rob Berger’s YouTube channel, I told her that her number one expense outside of rent was sending her so called advisor to Hawaii every winter with his family. She hasn’t budged. She believes that she needs an advisor. She believes that investing is too complicated to understand and she doesn’t want to understand it. She believes that she is of a social class that is “above” DIY personal finance.

She has dementia.

The stock market has averaged about 11% per year historically with very high volatility. So for all these years, nearly every investor in the world has been willing to risk the volatility of stocks to chase 11% returns when they could have been getting 10% completely risk free, and somehow nobody noticed this other than some pumo on xoxo. Very odd case.

Eminently possible /=/ entirely risk free

It does mean one should focus less on growth stocks, and that some higher dividends are very possible, and ability to give up work entirely is a very intriguing possibility for many

Dividends also ensure returns even when the market is crashing. Remember that!!!

most XO'ers including myself save too much for retirement. let home equity and SS do and let it ride. the only expense that increases beyond middle age is health care. And that's borne by the Feds, not the Medicare enrollees. Kids' education can be subsidized by moving to Key West and doing nothing.
