It's a tough album to recommend because you can't listen to it casually. It's meant to be listened to from beginning to end, and you're supposed to locked in and paying attention the whole time.

That's a lot to ask of someone and it's not how I came to "listen" to it. Instead I put it on as background music for a full month, on repeat. I just let it play on repeat for a full month. I did this during my final year of undergrad, in part as a way to fuck with my roommates and make them listen to it too. It worked, but it took a month.

Anyway that's what it takes. I'm gonna have to start a separate thread on AMERICAN music some day and try to do it in chronological order. Bitches Brew comes in at the end stages and is in many way the last great AMERICAN music album. It's also really dirty and nasty. The people who made it were very angry.

Three days. That's all the time it took to lay it down. Miles didn't even book more time in the studio. What can Musk do in three days?

-----------

Davis booked Columbia's Studio B in New York City from August 19–21, 1969.[13] The session on August 19 began at 10 a.m., with the band playing "Bitches Brew" first. Everyone was set up in a half-circle with Davis and Shorter in the middle. In Lenny White’s words:

"It was like an orchestra, and Miles was our conductor. We wore headphones. We had to be able to hear each other. There were no guests at that session. No photos allowed. But there was one guest that nobody talked about, Max Roach. All live recording, no overdubs. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., for three days."

The first song is 20 minutes. It's meant to be listened to first. If you can make it through the first song from beginning to end, that's fucking impressive. When Miles finally comes in he makes you think the whole song is going to be like that.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz called Bitches Brew "one of the most remarkable creative statements of the last half-century, in any artistic form. It is also profoundly flawed, a gigantic torso of burstingly noisy music that absolutely refuses to resolve itself under any recognized guise."[30]

Jimi Hendrix was the reason Bitches Brew got made. Miles saw Hendrix as competition. That's one of the reasons he was mad that year.

He went electric for the first time on Bitches Brew. He wasn't thinking much more than "I gotta go electric" at the time. Hendrix made him feel like he HAD to do something he'd never done, and this was his first attempt at doing it. He knew if he didn't go electric, he'd become a washed up has-been doing shows on yachts.

he had sickle cell anemia and was dealing with constant pain. He spent many years withdrawn in his home and received no visitor except a few bitches he was fucking, and even that was a rare event for him for like 2 years. These were sympathy fucks from girlfriends he'd had years earlier.

He dropped out of Juilliard before he did any of that. You get into Juilliard while being black in the 1940s, then you can talk. He wasn't even from NYC.

Much of Davis's time was spent in clubs seeking his idol, Charlie Parker. According to Davis, Coleman Hawkins told him "finish your studies at Juilliard and forget Bird [Parker]".[33][29] After finding Parker, he joined a cadre of regulars at Minton's and Monroe's in Harlem who held jam sessions every night. The other regulars included J. J. Johnson, Kenny Clarke, Thelonious Monk, Fats Navarro, and Freddie Webster.

It's like asking someone to experience slavery. You wouldn't normally do it voluntarily. However, Miles was a big racialist. He was always looking for ways to make white people feel uncomfortable without compromising his commercial success. He didn't like the way white people "understood" black music. He didn't think it came from a place of sorrow and poverty.

Thom Yorke, singer of the English rock band Radiohead, cited it as an influence on their 1997 album OK Computer: "It was building something up and watching it fall apart, that's the beauty of it. It was at the core of what we were trying to do."[45]

PS the only reason Miles cared about Jimi Hendrix was because he was the most successful black musician in 1969. Miles was used to being #1, but suddenly this faggot appeared with his electric guitar jerking off on stage, and white people loved it. Miles couldn't stand it.
