Seems like so many things could go wrong shooting upside down

bored police are always practicing crazy tactical things that they’ll never use

but I imagine Delta learns some useful tricks that go with this training even if they don’t do the whole upside down window entry thing

I saw an interview with Tyler Grey, ex Delta Force who was an actor on the SEAL Team show. he described after passing selection and the real training began as "being like the hero in an action movie every day" but couldn't really say what

i find myself watching these guys podcast videos a lot. a bunch are full of themselves, etc, but the level of physical and mental eliteness they have is insane. Basically pro athlete levels of physicality (including shooting) combined with super human mental fortitude including being able to handle absurd levels of stress and still perform at a top level.

No fault of Delta that their choppers crashed.

it wasn’t “their” choppers that crashed. a single USMC helo drifted during takeoff in a sandstorm and crashed into a parked C-130 that just happened to have massive bladders filled with fuel on it

that being said, the operation as concocted was insane

If they had gotten to the embassy then at the very least they would have killed all the hothead hostage takers. That would have given the nation some kind of cathartic relief.

But yeah, as I recall the exfil required them to fight their way to a soccer stadium in the middle of Teheran and get choppered out. Seems likely that a city the size of Teheran might just absorb a small force of even elite troops.

In reading about it, I wondered what regular old Teheran police would be doing - they would have had a long time to respond before they even tried to get the hostages out. And a city that size in a police state no doubt has probably tens of thousands of potential armed responders.

Guests of the Ayatollah is a 180 book

but yeah I think most of the hostages would have been killed or not found, bunch of our guys and birds dead, and we would have had to use massive airpower to bomb Tehran and extract whatever remained

The Iranians' slogan was "America can't do anything." I think the desire to do at least something that would result in a lot of them being killed was the driving force behind a borderline suicide mission.

“One legacy from the operation that has lived on today is the motto of the 8th SOS, "With the guts to try." This phrase came after two British Airmen quietly delivered two cases of beer with the words "To you all, from us all, for having the guts to try" scribbled across the cardboard lid of one of the cases.“
