In 2020 as Olds died off and boomers aged into the old bracket, whites drifted away from Trump slightly. In 2024 he brought blacks and Latinos into the fold and it was working class vs the ruling elites. So there's more to the shift than that. McCain and Romney utterly failed to engage rural whites so 2016 was more unforeseen than 2024. Dems actually knew that Latinos had drifted away from them politically but since they control most of the media no one wanted to admit this because they were hoping it wasn't actually true.
