Ive been reading pat buchanan's "the unnecessary war" and see a lot of parallels b/w the UK in 1920 and the USA in 2020. Debt piling up, untenable defense commitments, rapidly industrializing opponents... their response was to self-neuter their domestic warship industry and sever diplomatic ties with Japan, a one-two punch that totally fucked up their empire and left them dependent on the USA.
Trump's effort to get a China/Russia/USA defense spending reduction kinda seems like it would be a similar self-own, when viewed a little down the road.
