D.W. Gibson: There has been quite a reaction to your story.
Cheryl Kaplan: Yes, I am aware. Most of the reaction has praised me for my bravery but there are a few trolls that have begun to harass me, both on reddit, where I share the full story with other heroic women, but also in public.
Gibson: What are the details you share on reddit that were missing from our real estate feature?
Kaplan: The first is the personal struggle with leaving a person you care about. Nearly a decade ago my husband was diagnosed with something called sarcopenia. It causes a gradual loss of muscle mass, strength, and function, and it decreases his height due to weakened muscles and posture.
Gibson: How tall is your ex-husband today?
Kaplan: I cannot say for sure. He was barely 6’1” when I married him but he was a gentleman and he was very funny, so I looked at the bigger picture. By the time we moved to North Carolina he was probably well under 6” tall – possibly as small as 5’11” but his posture made things so much worse for the two of us.
Gibson: Because he appeared smaller.
Kaplan: *nods*
Gibson: You mention North Carolina. What exactly did you expect and what was the reality?
Kaplan: I thought we would have a fresh start. Many of my friends in New Jersey were becoming very concerned about his height loss. I thought we would live in a home secluded from the rest of the people so he could live out his days in peace. I was very surprised at how friendly the neighbors were and that the men there were so much taller than my Jewish community in South Orange. There was also a state penitentiary very close to our home that had actual serial killers that you could visit. It would never last.
Gibson: Is there anything else you would like to clear up?
Kaplan: There is not much more to it, is there?
