It’s pretty clearly Stone Temple Pilots, but I always thought L7 was relying a lot on pre-1991 notoriety, L.A. scene cred and lesbian/girl group AA, and then riot grrrl came along and made them seem like lame hair band/rockstar wannabes.

STP just does not hold up. It works as time capsule music that may remind you of the time you hooked up with a girl you still think about at a party, but it’s objectively bland and soulless paint-by-numbers dreck. Cf. a band like Smashing Pumpkins, who had a genuinely obnoxious singer with a grating voice, and yet they have many songs that still work today and appeal to people for reasons that don’t ultimately boil down to “you just had to be there in 1995.”

This is a retarded take, but I get that I’ve triggered you. It’s easily their best song, it’s a great representation of how to make grunge pop, as is Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart. But basically every other single is just the most bland, derivative dog shit, and those two songs are not coincidentally when they stray from sounding trendy and instead just try to make big chorus hard rock. It’s a shame they didn’t do more of that, but it’s also clear why they didn’t. They didn’t really have anything to say and pretty obviously glommed on to grunge because it was trendy and they wanted to be rock stars. Cf Alice In Chains, who did the same thing, but Layne and Jerry were much more interesting artists and created better art. STP were always the Poochie the Rockin Dog of grunge.

grunge was just a cosmetic label to sell an image to the next MTV generation.

It was a descriptor of a specific set of bands and a sound that was really a moment in time/of a scene in Seattle, but the major labels tried to take it and reapply it more broadly to anything that sounded like a punk-metal hybrid and then ultimately just generic indie rock of any type.

Celebrity Skin has some good tracks. There's no way that Hole is the most overrated anything, because they hold up OK in retrospect and aren't all that highly rated in the first place.

Live Through This was massively hyped, was at the top of like every album of the year list along with the MTV unplugged. It’s heresy and I still enjoy listening to it a lot, and I can even get behind the argument that it’s a triumph given how fully down the junkie spiral Kurt already was, but the Unplugged set was for girls and is easily the most overrated thing they did. I have strong time capsule connections to it and enjoy the covers a lot, but it was also maddening how the radio played it constantly for over a year. Meanwhile Kurt’s true last great work was sitting right there, and whatever else one may say Courtney Love’s vocal abilities were a great match for all the songs he wrote for her. Celebrity Skin was the cringey phase where she was trying to transition to acting and it sounded like it had been focus grouped to death.

Asking for It, Credit in the Straight World, She Walks on Me and Gutless are not at the level of the rest of the album, but actually they aren’t that bad and it’s full of bangers and plays great front to back. I think I was remembering it with too much of a Spotify playlist/skip button perspective.

Pearl jam sounds especially tinny and preachy if you listen to them after mother love bone, which had the same guitarist and bassist but a far better lead songwriter and vocalist, andrew wood.

Andrew Wood is a great candidate for most overrated, especially as a songwriter. The reality is that Goddard and McCready were pretty clearly held back by him and his OD was the best thing that could’ve happened to their music careers. Vedder is overrated (though not nearly as much as he was in 1994) and annoying, but he’s still a critical figure and being a proper baritone after the decade of screeching/falsetto bad Dio derived singer schticks during the metal-informed rock hits of the 80s was a critical contribution to grunge’s pushback on hair metal overall.

Rather than overrated, Andrew wood's best songs, like Chloe dancer/crown of thorns and gentle groove, are practically unknown. they evoke ranges of emotion, from anger and sadness to desire and joy, with a power and artistry that bitchy vedder-fronted Pearl jam can only dream of.

If your contention is that Wood wrote better lyrics than Vedder/Pearl Jam I can sign off on that. But musically Motherlove Bone was decidedly mid.

MLB is musically superior. Crown of thorns reaches the heights of rock music.

Pj isn't a bad band but none of their tracks has the haunting or ingenious melodies of the best rock.yet they can still pack venues with 40k fans per night, which merits the overrated designation.

That song blows. Sounds like November Rain had a baby with that singer from the band that Adriana tried to manage on the Sopranos. You have terrible taste. HTH.

all grunge is underrated imo, especially compared to BoomerRock. Boomers all became ignominious plastic corpo-simulations of their former glory. Grunge at least kept it Real and died of heroin overdoses or just pure despair. Cobain was the most famous person in the world and still decided that Life is Fundamentally Meaningless. Meanwhile Neil Young is making political ballads that no one Cares about.

The fact that all of Gen X loves it so much just makes it fun to Joke about. They have the infatuation of boomer women who listened to the Beatles in the 60s. Grunge may have arisen organically but its hold on the mainstream was Engineered by MTV and record companies or something, and to great effect. Gen X are the consumerists they despise. At least millennials just Don’t Care about music if they’re not Losers.

We love it because it was so obvious how much boomers hated it and hated not being able to control the culture for the first time in 25 years. Hip hop used to be the same way, but then post-Biggie/2Pac Puffy engineered the great sellout and made the entire genre about bling and being a closeted fag and boomers were like “ok yeah we’ll sign off on this and help it take over the culture because we prefer being scared of your BBCs and gun violence to how old and uncool the Gen X whites have made us feel for the last five years.”

Thought about them but they were so inconsequential at the time that it’s hard to argue they were that overrated. I also thought about Pavement, but in both cases it was more that annoying douchebags overrated them mainly because most people didn’t actually listen to them, especially 99% of girls who just NPC’d to whatever was on the radio.

Not really, but they get lumped in as an alternative rock band who was pushed by the mainstream rock critics and MTV as a next big thing for a moment in the 90s. Per above the term grunge has been diluted over the years but really referred to a much more specific and localized early 90s west coast/primarily Seattle scene.

I don't see how they could be overrated, they're basically forgotten

that's the problem with "overrated" threads, it's really asking two unrelated questions and mashing them together. how good are they, and how good are they reputed to be

maybe Screaming Trees were overrated at their heydey (I'm neutral on that) but they're definitely not overrated now

They are typically held in very high regard by musicmos. They were inarguably a foundational grunge band there at the beginning of the scene. They get deserved credit for that. But I don't think the quality of their music measures up. I'd say a great band has to have great songs plus significant influence.

Not a grunge band at all. That said, Sonic Youth’s attempts to get MTV and radio airplay in the early 90s were some of their worst stuff, even though Dirty is still packed with bangers and Bull in the Heather is a decent attempt at translating their sound into a radio friendly template.

The band recorded and co-produced the album with Butch Vig in early 1992 at the Magic Shop recording studios. The sound on Dirty was inspired by the popularity of grunge music at the time, and has been described by Billboard magazine as experimental rock.[1]

He was an innately skilled songwriter both lyrically and melodically whose limitations as a musician were perfectly masked by the exact moment that he rose to meet. Seeing the Smells Like Teen Spirit video on MTV in September of 1991 is likely going to remain the most “struck by a lightning bolt” musical moment of my lifetime (and then seeing it 15 more times that weekend). It was truly one hell of a sensation feeling to realize that you knew in real time the world had changed and everything you knew about pop music culture was about to be upended.
