This is like a scene out Succession.

"That fall, as his end-of-year retirement date approached, Mr. Iger said he didn’t want a farewell ceremony or party at Disney. The thought of Mr. Chapek hosting such an event was too galling. Instead, he and his wife decided to host their own party at their home in Brentwood. Mr. Iger chose a date when he knew Mr. Chapek would be in Orlando, Fla., for an event.

Mr. Chapek canceled the trip.

...

Ms. Bay, Mr. Iger’s wife, was outside greeting guests as they arrived. “Tom Schumacher, it’s been too long,” she gushed. “I can’t believe you came all this way.” She embraced Mr. Schumacher. Mr. Chapek stood awkwardly by until she finally turned to him. “Hi, Bob. I see you all the time,” she said. She turned back to Mr. Schumacher.

A guest who witnessed the exchange recalled Bette Davis’s memorable line in “All About Eve”: “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”

...

Mr. Iger began a speech recognizing people who’d helped and inspired him. In one of his first jobs at ABC, Mr. Iger had worked as an assistant to the acclaimed sportscaster Al Michaels, who was at the party. Mr. Iger mentioned that back in the day he and Mr. Michaels had covered dirt-track racing in Terre Haute, Ind., for “Wide World of Sports.” Mr. Iger looked toward Mr. Chapek and went off script: “That’s your area, isn’t it Bob?” he asked, referring to Terre Haute, in rural southwestern Indiana. “You’d know all about dirt tracks.”

Mr. Chapek’s hometown of Hammond is near Chicago. He seethed at what he felt was a put-down.

Mr. Iger pushed on, worked his way through his career thanking people and then paused when he reached the present. “I think I’ll just stop there,” he said. “Thank you all for coming.” There was no praise, and no further mention, of Mr. Chapek.

Mr. Chapek reddened as he felt every gaze turn on him. He stood up and stalked out."

During Mr. Iger’s tenure, the studio had greenlighted a bevy of projects with progressive social and political themes. But Mr. Chapek worried the development slate had veered too far left on social issues. Disney was being pulled into partisan political debates more frequently, a worrisome situation for a brand that was supposed to stand for everyone.

Some board members agreed. Coming up through the pipeline was “Strange World,” Disney’s first animated film focusing on an openly gay teenager. Ms. Catz, a board member, was so opposed to the character that she told Mr. Chapek she’d have him fired if Disney released the film. He reported the threat to Ms. Arnold.

The film was too far along for Mr. Chapek to block it, but his fears about Disney’s becoming a cultural flashpoint soon materialized. In January 2022, the Parental Rights in Education bill was introduced in Florida. Opponents labeled the bill “Don’t Say Gay” because it prohibited classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity for young students. The Human Rights Campaign, a prominent L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy organization, soon had more than 100 corporate signatories to a letter opposing anti-gay legislation in various statehouses. Media companies like Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, had signed on. But Disney, one of the largest employers in Florida, was conspicuously absent.

...

In the midst of this, Disney’s board held an emergency meeting to discuss the mounting controversy. Mr. Chapek told the board that, in keeping with the company’s new policy, Disney had not signed the Human Rights Campaign petition. Ms. Arnold was taken aback. “I’m confused,” she said. “You told me Disney was going to sign it.”

The discussion moved on, but Ms. Arnold was visibly upset. Mr. Chapek sent her a text: “My bad. We decided not to sign. I got busy and forgot to tell you.”

Ms. Arnold was furious.

On March 9, Ms. Arnold’s first shareholder meeting as chair, Mr. Chapek extolled the company’s recent accomplishments in a taped video, then delivered a mea culpa. “I understand our political approach, no matter how well-intentioned, didn’t quite get the job done,” he said. He announced that Disney would sign the letter and give $5 million to the organization. The Human Rights Campaign promptly said it would take the money only after Disney demonstrated it was following through on its promises.

Two days later, Mr. Chapek went even further in another memo to employees: “You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights, and I let you down. I am sorry.” Taking direct aim at Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, he also halted political contributions in the state.

There were those at Disney, including Ms. Arnold, who thought Mr. Chapek had now gone too far in the other direction. The about-face and abject apology did little to assuage Disney’s outraged L.G.B.T.Q. community. And it gave Florida’s governor a national platform to mock the company as “Woke Disney.” “If Disney wants to pick a fight, they chose the wrong guy,” Mr. DeSantis said. Florida moved to revoke Disney World’s special tax status and Disney and the state were soon battling it out in court.

At the very beginning of Mr. Chapek’s time as C.E.O., the Disney board member Susan Arnold warned him that his working relationship with Mr. Iger would be tricky. “Don’t step on his toes,” she advised.

Mr. Chapek thought it unfair that he was being blamed for a policy that had been endorsed by the board at every step. And he saw Mr. Iger’s “assassin” fingerprints all over the ensuing firestorm, starting with his tweet. His suspicions only hardened on March 31, when Mr. Iger appeared on CNN. Mr. Iger never mentioned Mr. Chapek by name, but he didn’t need to. “To me, it wasn’t about politics,” Mr. Iger said on the air. “It is about what is right and what is wrong, and that just seemed wrong.”

Great example of how disconnected from reality 'conspiracy' nuts are

There is no Cabal Of Sinister, Competent Elites running the show. It's just a bunch of retarded, clueless strivers like these people, virtue signaling to each other for slivers of advantage on the status ladder

The reason why everything sucks and is vaguely to explicitly shitlib is because the ranks of the striver class are filled with these talentless hacks who legitimately do not care about anything at all except "owning" their perceived "rivals" in their imagined status games that are less interesting and compelling than your 6th grade social circle

In an interview with Julia Boorstin of CNBC, Mr. Chapek fawned over his predecessor. “I obviously have huge shoes to fill,” he said with wide eyes, hailing Mr. Iger’s “magic” running Disney. Mr. Iger’s 15-year tenure as chief executive had been so successful that he had considered running for president as a Democrat. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him just before she died.

Mr. Iger said he and Mr. Chapek had worked together “extremely well,” but in the next breath qualified that praise: “Actually, our senior management team has worked together quite well.”

Mr. Chapek listened in vain for something more effusive, more personal.

As the questions — and the attention — shifted entirely to Mr. Chapek, Mr. Iger’s usually relaxed demeanor stiffened. His gaze shifted down, away from Mr. Chapek, and he looked increasingly uncomfortable. He crossed his arms.

Mr. Chapek was intimately familiar with Mr. Iger’s body language and expressions. “This is not good,” he thought.

He was right about that. But little did he realize that he and Mr. Iger were about to face off in an epic corporate power struggle with few rivals in business history.

good argument, esp your second paragraph.

and yet the game you describe has reliably churned out insane results that fit together. if they are playing a joint game and keep churning out those results, why shouldn't "conspiracy nuts" point that out? it's a serious question, not flame.

also, notice the insidious role of Arnold, who seeks prestige by trying to force Disney to sign that wretched agreement. is it possible we have unprincipled, value-less strivers playing a joint game for social prestige and also have a small group of key activists who steer the game? notice that cons have won some victories in that arena lately, starting with the Bud Light incident. a number of retail brands (eg, John Deere) have backed off DEI and ESG when publicly challenged.

Arnold is openly lesbian.[16][17] Since 2002, she has been listed on Fortune magazine's 50 Most Powerful Women in Business as #7 in 2008. In 2004 and 2005, she was listed on the Wall Street Journal's 50 Women to Watch. The impression I got from the article is that Disney is filled with people that just want to make money and are being constantly harassed by a few board members and creative directors that need everything to be extremely gay and racial.

Now do every F500 company in America.

They should, but they're not pointing out what I'm talking about. Most of the people in question believe that there is a Deliberate Conspiracy/Cabal of people who are intentionally steering the world down a particular shitlib/bad/evil path. This isn't true

The world works the way it does and people behave the way they do because of the web of incentives and dis-incentives that guide their behavior. This is a pretty complex topic and I'm not going to type it all out on my phone, but the TL;DR is that people want power and status, and in a mass society, shitlibbery and signaling for shitlibbery is a very effective strategy for people of relatively lower levels of legitimate talent to gain power and status

This isn't to say that there aren't very real factions and groups of people: Jews really do hate white people and work toward their destruction, non-whites really do hate white people and work toward their destruction, the inferior really do hate the superior, etc. But in the aggregate, the effect of all of these peoples and groups are fairly small and inconsequential on their own. It's the broad incentives and dis-incentives that steer the direction of society

This is why the reform of mass society is impossible. Once inferior people are enfranchised, shitlibbery is always going to be the dominant strategy. You're never going to convince inferior people that it's in their interest to voluntarily defer and submit to superior people - or even that they're inferior in the first place

People like "Bob Iger" will always be "shitlibs." His comparative advantage over other people is his level of raw sociopathy, unscrupulousness, and shameless personal ambition. Shitlibbery offers a framework to maximize these "gifts." Meritocracy does not. "Bob Iger" is not actually good at running a business, managing people, long-range planning, etc. He's good at conniving and playing status games. He'd be a nobody in a meritocracy. He will always be oriented toward shitlibbery as a strategy for maximizing his personal gain, like everyone else in his "tribe" and "class," and these people have been heavily selected for during the past 50 years and now make up the ranks of our "elite," making our society more shitlib, etc. It's a self-reinforcing cycle

TBF the Bob Iger of 15 years ago was pretty fucking good at M&A valuations. But this was an intensely credited screed as was your original poast in this subthread.

Agree with most of this.

The problem imo for people who aren't wired to play the game and lean into the cabal is that meritocracy used to be part of the game. Just like after the Supreme Court ruling, MIT got rid of half the URMs and filled up with more Asians.

The world Trump and Elon are trying to build is that world. Sure, have your super striver liberal cabal. But let the other half compete. Independent stuff has gotten way better and slowly progressed, but it needs more support.

The way you truly compete with shitlibbery is a strong middle class above all. Hard working smart people with a cushion to fall back on. Some of these kids will grow up to start new companies and come up with new ideas based on a different set of values.

What the elites hate more than anything is competition, as evinced by this article. Iger never wanted to step down, Putin doesn't want to step down, and neither did Jay Leno. This country is dying because of what Jordan Peterson calls nepotism and dynasty. The RSFs of the world who never have to work and dunk on prole roaches. You need new blood for a healthy society. You need low cost of living and good paying easy jobs so entrepreneurs can moonlight. Read about young George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg. James Cameron was a truck driver. Spielberg had a fake office on the Warner lot where he got deals done with a firm handshake. The Eagles lived in Silverlake and could pay all their bills on a minimum wage part time job. We need to bring competition back. There's no guarantee that these corporations are 'the best' at doing anything, but they have no competition because you have to go into enormous personal debt just to feed yourself and not die.

Consider that as a result of the Russian Collusion Hoax, the 51 IC chiefs letter about Hunter's laptop, all the fuck-ups about COVID, the coverup of Biden's dementia, the first assassination attempt on Trump, etc., basically no one in the elite circles was fired. one was permitted to resign. there is zero accountability. we've become what used to be called a Mediterranean nation instead of an Anglo-Saxon one. the elites are all clients and patrons, all the way up and down.

Even if Trump wins it's unlikely he will fire anyone who did this to him. Sad. I actually don't think he will do anything at all the reverse course. Conspiracy nuts fail Occam's razor, because they insist on inserting variables into the equation that add no explanatory value. You thought this was just mundane high school level bickering and taunts, but if you add up the numbers in Bob Iger's birthdate they are the same as the longitude at Epstein Island, and notice that he's always wearing a red tie, and there's even footage where he gives Obama a secret handshake...

He sounds like the Kevin Spacey character in House of Cards running circles around a dumb, bald, fat, midwestern goy, but it’s less impressive when you remember that he got to pick his opponent and the article strongly implies this was his plan all along. But Iger is like the poster boy of Hollywood boomers who hate Tech and the effect it’s had on media and run their industry pretending it’s still the 20th century. Hilarious to think how this would’ve played out if Iger had waited longer and the Biden senility forced retirement narrative had been dominating the cultural context for it.

Before the meeting, Disney’s investor relations personnel assembled thick briefing binders covering every conceivable data point and question that might arise. Armed with these binders, Mr. Iger and Mr. Chapek settled into the front compartment of the Disney Gulfstream jet for the four-and-a-half-hour flight to Raleigh, N.C., the site of that year’s meeting, for what Mr. Chapek expected would be an extended preparation session.

Several passengers, including Mr. Chapek, recalled that Mr. Iger pulled out his iPad and started flipping through recent photographs, telling the stories behind them. There were photos of himself with Mr. McCartney and recent dinner guests in New York. Mr. Chapek said he tried to steer the discussion back to the annual meeting, but Mr. Iger interrupted: “Did you see my new yacht design?”

Flustered by Mr. Iger’s digressions, Mr. Chapek got up and moved to the plane’s rear compartment.

...

Mr. Chapek’s extended absence was noted in the front cabin. “Does Bob want to get briefed or not?” Mr. Iger asked his fellow passengers, Ms. McCarthy, Ms. Mucha and Mr. Braverman. Finally, Mr. Iger stood up and went to find Mr. Chapek.

“Bob, do you want to sit with us so we can brief you?” Mr. Iger asked.

“Isn’t it all in here?” Mr. Chapek replied, holding up the binder. Mr. Iger said the book couldn’t convey the nuances. But Mr. Chapek said he’d review the book and let him know if he had any questions. He went back to his reading.

“He doesn’t want to be prepped. He says the book is enough,” an incredulous Mr. Iger told his fellow passengers when he returned to the front compartment. Mr. Iger suddenly felt as if he were at the wedding altar with the bride walking down the aisle. He realized he’d made a terrible mistake. But it was too late.

Chapek comes off like a weird, butthurt autist.

"He had started at Disney in 1993 in the VHS tape department", lol.

Obviously the CEO of Disney needs to be a smooth guy. Seems like Iger purposely picked him, over other people, to just be his loyal #2 and let Iger keep running the show.

Chapek should have known that was the deal, gone along with it, stayed in his lane, and get paid millions, instead of getting all bent out of shape over it.

(Guy who doesn’t read too good)

Chapek had nothing to do with the launch of Disney+/was running the Parks division when the CEO bake off, one of whom did lead the Disney+ launch, was happening, and then Iger declared them both losers and ran them both off. Chapek was his stooge he set up in late 2019, suddenly and as a surprise to everyone with no input from the board, when he saw the data from China about this weird respiratory virus that could be catastrophic for Disney’s business.

Also, lol at Disney theatrical being in trouble. They are lapping all the other studios this year, and had multiple billion+ movies. Their issue is that it’s all sequels and further extensions of existing IP, which doesn’t feed the merchandise and licensing business nearly as well, and all theatrical for Disney is just set up for merchandising, licensing and the parks business, where they make orders of magnitude more than they make on theatrical.

But I am still a long-term bull on Disney and anyone who is paying attention should be too. They are Chinese water torturing the cable business out of existence and will launch their direct to consumer full ESPN streaming app and that will be a massive inflection point that people are grossly underestimating. Netflix will be caught out by it and over time Disney’s combined services will bring in like 3-4x Netflix’s revenue per subscriber. You have to measure Disney relative to the other traditional studios, and as soon as you do it’s no contest: Paramount in a firesale for pennies on the dollar of what the assets were worth like 7 quarters ago, WBD following closely behind, Comcast completely weighed down by its cable dependency, Sony fully out of the game and reduced to a glorified production company attached to a much bigger video game and electronics business, and will likely be spun off to whichever Tech conglomerate wants to get active again when the rates drop (really that’s the case for all four of the other old school studios). The only studio that is poised to compete and maintain a lead role past 2030 is Disney, especially after they launch their ESPN flagship app and destroy the cable subscription business once and for all.

DMED, taking power away from creatives to determine their distribution which ultimately just shoveled all the content onto Disney+, was his brainchild so it seems like you're splitting hairs.

Anyway, Disney is probably on a good track now, especially as they've cut back on streaming spending.

The centralization of all decision making authority for streaming and studios under his buttboy Kareem Daniel definitely was all Chapek and was real retarded sir. The big problem the company and the industry has is that Iger really is the poster boy for all of these Hollywood boomers who have been in control for 30+ years and don’t want to retire, cognitive declines be damned. It’s a weird additional drag on everything, partly because they are cognitively diminished and partly because they have been there for 30+ years and now get preposterous compensation which leaves less money to recruit the next/younger generations and they can’t compete for talent anymore. But between that and ESPN there’s a lot to like about Disney’s post-Iger positioning and the ride up they ought to offer from 2026 when Iger leaves until 2030.

Chapek should have realized he was never really the CEO from the start. Which his wife did realize.

And then he can either be ok being a glorified COO under Iger, or, I guess just quit and not take the job, because that was the job on offer.

To make it like Conan and Leno, it would be something like Leno staying on as producer of the Tonight Show with Conan as host. In that case, Conan should have realized he's not really in charge.

Hilarious that after lines like this:

"While pledging to help Mr. Chapek succeed, she pointed out some of his weaknesses: He knew next to nothing about the television business, he didn’t know anything about sports programming, he didn’t have many relationships with Hollywood talent, he hadn’t dealt with Wall Street. Mr. Iger agreed that Mr. Chapek didn’t come across as especially creative."

And this:

"Mr. Chapek was nervous, all the more so because public speaking had never been his strength."

They still said "that's our man!"

The problem with this shit is it is all impossible to tell:

1. Vibes were off with Chapeck but stock price is down with Iger

2. "Iger greenlit Deadpool 3 and Inside Out 2!" oh cool so the easiest decisions ever? What a creative visionary!

3. There's no discussion of Lucasarts which is Disney's boondoggle of the past few years. To basically lose money on Star Wars and Indiana Jones properties is absolutely insane.

4. There's also just no commercial brains at the studios. Someone pointed it out, but why in Disney's 100th year is Pixar doing some movie about an asian teen getting her period and turning into a panda? Just do a fucking Mickey Mouse movie.

5. I think a huge long-term problem for Disney is they're focused too much on adults. The parks are trying to get alcohol money from DINKS. The ticket prices are out of reach for normal families. The movies are often critically acclaimed but kids prefer Mario / Minions. I'm sure its great for short term profits because DINKS have a lot of money and will spend $300 to build some stupid light saber, but i get the feeling that in 20 years people won't have the same affinity for Disney as they do now.

5. hits the nail on the head.

What’s Disney Animation’s last hit that wasn’t a sequel?

What’s Pixar’s last hit that wasn’t a sequel?

Is Lucasfilm ever going to put out another movie? Is Marvel?

The problem is that everything over there is running on fumes and they either don’t have the guts or the creativity to release original hits.

Eventually the diminishing returns will fully diminish.

Mr. Chapek’s hometown of Hammond is near Chicago. He seethed at what he felt was a put-down.
