There are several bearish things going on in AI that should make one nervous about Nvidia. Orion (GPT-5) is apparently disappointing and only slightly better than GPT-5. Suggests brute force scaling is no longer paying off.

DeepSeek implies frontier models can be trained much more cheaply than they have been. More improvements here are likely.

The inference scaling models aren’t much better than the base LLMs, so I don’t anticipate that being a major area of growth yet.

Also I was reading that during 2000 there was a rush to build out infrastructure with no real demand caught up behind it and same thing is happening now wrt to power demand which overall is a drain to industry finances and may cause the same downturn.

Maybe. It seems like they were building in anticipation of $1+ billion training runs. There isn’t a clear reason why they would want to spend that much compute right now, if all they are getting is a marginally better MMLU score.

It’s 100% for training runs, but now customer lawyers have caught on and they can’t swipe the customer data as easily. The new thing is AI vendors offering exclusive features and even discounts if customers do allow the vendors to train models with their data and a bunch of likely bullshit, hard to verify promises about anonymization and segregation. But the volume of training runs is likely going to be lower than what people claimed/expected 12 months ago.

The more fundamental problem is the data inefficiency of the current paradigm. They are relying on shit tons of data to cover a large amount of the input space. Almost whatever data they can find now is not likely to make much of a difference.

For existing LLM bullshit that’s probably true, but there are literally thousands of more industry and org specific use cases for Gen AI that will be built out over the next decade or so. The network edge stuff alone has the potential to be very transformative and and much more specialized, albeit with a million new capabilities/patches that will make those use cases get better over time.
