i find after drug-induced states of emotional and physical effusion i'm more depressed in the aftermath because i'm critical of the way i put myself out there. depression is rumination and a form of endless self-criticism. once you learn to hate yourself you never stop trying to fix yourself and you're never fine with the way you are. ironically, this makes you try to fix yourself in the wrong way - you don't take action but you keep thinking over and over for a course of action that is foolproof. that's because your early, innocent actions have been met with criticism and rejection. you become convinced that there's isn't an action you can take that will result in a positive outcome. and you identify the source of your pain with people and you start to dislike people which makes you less social. of course, that is often because you were surrounded by the wrong people and you're incorrectly generalizing. but this is why people come to xoxohth.com. it's a place where they can give and take freely of the negativity they're comfortable with.

i should add also that it makes you defensive and negative toward people and that makes them dislike you even if they would have been perfectly ok with you. the social aspect is self-reinforcing

it's because xoxoers are smart.

the funny thing is that's the one area where it doesn't pay to be smart. it's the depressive realism model. xoxoers are depressed and see shit for what it is. but seeing shit for what it is useless to a certain point in your life. you have to be a little blind. xoxoers need a little prelapsarian animal intelligence. the kind of intelligence that faith provides and yes is a cliche. tolstoy talked about how he learned from peasants how to be happy again. at least redditors support each others dumb bullshit

These people participate in slightly offputting but quite normal ape interaction, and you write them off for lacking introspection? How can you know that? What interaction would you require with them to think "hmm maybe they have been forced inward" -- and is interaction with one of these who passes that test supposed to be fulfilling, or what? What's the goal?

I often think these things about others, as a combination of egocentrism and solipsism, I can't imagine the majority of people I come across as having any worthwhile inner life that I would ever want to explore.

I can't know that for sure about everyone I encounter, true. But I've collected enough evidence about different personalities to go on over several decades. It's reliable, but how reliable? Nowhere near perfectly. Also see what I initially wrote about alienation making you generalize about people. I'm aware that much of it is a mental block. I would actually prefer to be more external and less neurotic.

Not really sure it's been two long periods for me. From maybe 17-21 it happened the first time. Then I just got fed up with it. Got into really good shape for kicks and just suddenly wanted to be social and enjoyed being around people. Then fell into it again from maybe 25 to 29. Same thing. I feel fairly positive about life and I'm social etc despite going to through a difficult period. Just separated from wife and the pain sucks but it's not that don't give a fuck about anything no feelings blackmore. Makes me nervous I'll fall back in again.

So yeah in short I don't really have any tips. I'll say that both times I broke out of it I got in good physical shape but I feel like that's more correlated to feeling something about life again rather than causal. But it can be a snowball effect where they feed off each other I think.
