To my surprise, she came back to intern at my company the following summer. She was an architect major and had offers from firms in Chicago and New York, but she declined those and came back to intern for my company a second summer. We went to lunch her second day and I asked her why she declined those other internships. She told me it was because she wanted to see me. I then pulled out my medical school acceptance letter, had her read it, and told her I did it so we could be together. She broke down crying. Later that week she told her parents about me but her dad was unimpressed and didn’t want her to marry a white guy and told her that if she didn’t agree to an arranged marriage he would disown her.

After that we went our separate ways. She ended up getting married to an Indian physician and they have two sons. We’re friends on Facebook but we never talk or text or chat ever. But I still think about her all the time.
