they got blighted hard in the 30's and 40's and never recovered. if you buy 'chestnuts' from an american store, most are imported from east asian commercial farms, and are quite different from the old american chestnut tree.

they've been trying cross-breeding and DNA manipulation. they're still not there yet.
chestnuts were the apex tree in Appalchia.
