Yes, that is a widely believed historical fact about Indian Yellow, a vibrant pigment used in European paintings, including those by Vincent van Gogh.
Indian Yellow & Its Origins in Munger, Bihar
Indian Yellow was made from the urine of cows that were exclusively fed a diet of mango leaves in Munger, Bihar (then Monghyr, Bengal Presidency).
The urine was collected, dried into lumps called “piuri”, and exported to Europe.
The pigment was known for its rich, warm yellow color with excellent lightfastness.
Van Gogh & Indian Yellow
Vincent van Gogh used Indian Yellow in several works, including “Starry Night” (1889) and “Sunflowers”.
It contributed to the luminous glow of his paintings, enhancing the golden hues.
Ban & Discontinuation (1908)
The production of Indian Yellow was banned in the early 1900s due to concerns about animal cruelty and the harmful effects of a mango-leaf diet on cows.
Modern Indian Yellow is now synthetic, made from organic pigments like Nickel Azo Yellow.
While the exact historical accuracy of the pigment’s origin is debated, records and oral traditions suggest that Munger, Bihar, was the primary source of Indian Yellow.
