there was an 8-10 year window where this was an active point of litigation
companies got all into electronic timekeeping systems. but you couldn't log in until the computer was on, you had opened the program, and entered your passcode. with older computers this could easily take 5 minutes from when you get to your desk to when you actually clock in. some very big companies got hit with class actions on this - turns out 5 minutes of unpaid time, every single day, for every single employee, turns into real money.
