And would never make it.

I remember the blood and saliva spraying out in little droplets as I tried to catch my breath.

I remember my whole world shrinking to just watching those droplets spray out across the carpet fibers.

I remember thinking I would die.

I remember my mom’s husband telling me not to tell anyone when he dropped me off at school for seventh grade.

I remember getting picked on for having marks on my face.

I remember getting home that day and desperately trying to clean the bloodstain on the carpet with Resolve to erase my shame.

I remember.

I don’t know about that.

I also have flashbacks about this other time where the was this fight and I just remember watching the blood drop, drop, drop down on the linoleum while I called 911 and then the cops came and asked me all these questions and I got to ride in the ambulance to the ER.

I think the more important question is why in those moments did it feel like the world shrank to a very small place, why did I feel so scared, and why do I have vivid flashbacks and relive this shit decades later?

Thanks brother. I don’t think it’s flame. The memory is too vivid for that. Keeps me up at night.

To answer your question with a metaphor, every memory is a physical, chemical burn somewhere in your hippocampus. The scars can be deeper or shallower, and when your mind drifts towards a deeper scar it is pulled in like gravity.

I'm very lucky in that I never had any real trauma as a child nor anyone who meant me real harm, but I know so many people who were hurt this way. It pains my heart to know that there are evil people who inflict these scars on others and against whom no retribution could possibly do justice for the damage they've done. I hope you find some measure of peace.
