I have only stumbled upon this site very recently and I'm simultaneously wincing and laughing hysterically about my alma mater. I graduated from Cooley. I have passed two bar exams. I am employed as a lawyer. However, I am also a few things that many of you bemoan. My undergrad GPA and LSAT were quite low. My class rank was 171/228. Anyway, here I am taking questions and undoubtedly about to take more than a few shots. If you want to know what Cooley is REALLY like, and why someone would go there, here's your chance. Fire away.

1) Alumni job bulletin. I answered an ad and I had a good interview.

2) Bad, real bad. However, public interest job in a rural area, dirt cheap to live in, lots of LRAP. No Honors Scholarship.

3) Less than half. My starting class was particularly bad as almost half washed out within three terms. Others washed out after that. Subsequent starting classes have done much better.

Yeah, I misused an adverb. So sorry. I also misspell and dangle the odd participle. I'm posting -- not proofreading, okay? Meanwhile, 2+2=4, right? Fifty states, yes?

Not offended -- merely took it as good-natured ribbing. Also, not only can I can be a dick, but a megaprick if I set my mind to it. If I could have been accepted to a T2, T3 or even a better T4, I would have gone there instead. Cooley was my best (only) option and I took advantage of it.

How does the LRAP thing work? For example, you apply for a year, right, and then they give you a loan and discharge it at the end of the year?

Both are based on whether I have outstanding loans and how much I actually owe. I had to apply for both. Employer LRAP is dished out monthly with no strings attached. LSC LRAP is one annual check and I have to stay at my job for an entire year (Oct. 1 -Sept. 30) or I owe it back to them. I will only get LSC LRAP for three years, but it will pay off my private loans.

2) how is it bad? under ibr all you have to pay is 15% of "discretionary income" toward it, and with public interest it'll be discharged after a decade anyway. how is the number significant? did you take out private loans, and if so, why?

IBR is a godsend and the public interest debt forgiveness may very likely keep me here for ten years. However, I'm still looking at a big payoff amount when my student loan bill arrives each month. Some of my LRAP will expire and I'm always worried about future funding. Yes, I took out private loans because I wanted to eat, have a place to live, buy a beer or two once in a while, go out on a date, etc.

2.5 gpa from a Cal State. I worked full-time for the entire time I that was an undergrad. LSAT was 146. I never did too well on standardized tests (26 ACT) and I did not study for it very much. However, by the time I finished Cooley, and then following the BarBri paced program to a tee, I did get a 148 on the MBE.

Are you referring to LSAT, MBE or both? LSAT was admittedly very low. I considered retaking it but I did not have the means to do so. I couldn't afford Kaplan and I really didn't have the time. I also had to work Sunday night before (Monday p.m. LSAT), graveyard shift, 9pm to 6am, and I was dragging at the end -- writing sample demonstrated lack of sleep and resulting incoherence. As for my 148 MBE, it was two points away from "multistating out" in Michigan and high enough to only be required to write the state portion for my second bar.

To be fair,

Your MBE would be impressive... if you hadn't spent your three years at Cooley literally studying for the Michigan bar, unlike all the kids who went to real law schools and had to spend their time learning a bunch of worthless high falutin theory in class that didn't help them at all before turning around and having to cram the real stuff on their own in a matter of months.

With that said, you seem like a cool dood and you're a surprisingly fluid writer from someone who looks so abjectly shitty on paper. Bravo mang.

I wasn't trying to impress anyone when I took the MBE. I was merely trying to rack up enough points to pass the fucker. Some people failed. Some of them even went to UM, MSU, Wayne, UDM and Ave. When the exam results were released, two of my best friends passed along with me. One got a 162 on the MBE and multistated out. The other got a 135 combined score and passed by the bare minimum. My score was in the middle, 148. Mr. 162 was no happier than Mr. 135 and when we celebrated, the beer was just as cold no matter what our scores were.

That being said, of the 90 credits it takes to graduate from Cooley, required couses make up 63 of them. Maybe in the grand scheme of things, Cooley "teaches to the test." The only material that was new to me when I was doing BarBri was Conflicts of Law and Domestic Relations. Personally, I think this is one thing that Cooley gets right. I felt better served when BarBri was not the first time I heard about Article 2 and commercial paper, as was the case for some people who went to "real" law schools. 27 credits of electives was plenty for dabbling in something a bit more esoteric.

Meanwhile, it's not just Michigan. Cooley students spend three years studying for all the other states' bar exams too. We read the same casebooks that are used by HYS, CCN, T14, etc. I was well served when I took my second bar. I took Torts, not Michigan Torts. My CivPro class was exclusively devoted to FRCP. The only required class that relied on Michigan law was Wills, Trusts and Estates.

Now brace yourself, because here comes some advice from a Cooley grad to someone who attends a more prestigious school... Cramming sucks. Whatever law school you go to, they probably offer a class in every bar exam subject you'll encounter. If you know what state you're writing, you might want to have a look at that state's tested subjects and then possibly take a few of those subjects as electives.

So, why would anyone go there? Seems like if you get a low LSAT score and low grades, law probably just isn't your thing. Or are the main criteria for law school admissions poor indicators of aptitude for midlaw/smalllaw?

I had a blue collar job in an industry that is largely being phased out. The handwriting was on the wall and most of the people I knew at my former job are unemployed with zero prospects. About the only thing I was remotely qualified to do was go to law school (well, Cooley...). If I had a stable, secure, well-paying job, I wouldn't have given it up. I have improved my quality of life imensely by going to Cooley. Laugh all you want, but I worked my ass off to achieve my 171/228 class rank and I took a job in a place that many XOXOers would dismissively describe as a shithole town, but I enjoy living here. As for law not being my thing, my numbers may indicate that. In any case, my bosses and my clients seem to be pleased with me.

Not laughing or saying law is not your thing. Just wondering how someone who can't manage to do reasonably well on the LSAT can reason well enough to be a good lawyer - apparently there is some disconnect in the reasoning skills the LSAT is measuring and ability to do legal reasoning, but I'm not sure what that is.

I don't necessarily disagree. My GPA might have been higher if I wasn't working instead of studying. My LSAT could have been higher. My numbers were mediocre at best -- they are what they are. LSAT, GPA, class rank are important for a while, but they are not everything. After you have been in practice for a few years, they are irrelevant.

I was referring to undergrad grades and LSAT. At Cooley, I didn't work until I was a 3L. I "clerked" at a toiletlaw firm that was too shortsighted to hire enough qualified people so they let the "clerks" have at it. I learned quite a bit and I was treated fairly well. In retrospect, I also came dangerously close to unauthorized practice on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, full-time and part-time at Cooley is much different than every other law school in the country. The typical Cooley student is enrolled year round (trimesters) and finishes in three years: 12+12+12+9+9+9+9+9+9=90.

Subject: Questions on workload

Hi I am about to enter Cooley. Would you recommend taking 12 credits in the first term or 9? wich scheduling option did you take? how was the workload? and Why didn't you transfer out?

First, I thought this thread had died. Next, assuming that this is not a flame posting, congratulations on getting into Cooley! I stood where you once did, so I know just how impressive that is! Finally, of course I'm kidding but just consider this to be some tough love. If you are really going to Cooley, get used to some degree of ridicule.

Don't take 9 credits unless you are forced to do so. Taking only 9 credits normally means that you were admitted to Cooley under "special considerations" -- that you didn't have a high enough admissions index to get in the regular way.

The overwhelming majority go with the PT36 schedule, which means you will graduate (hopefully) after attending classes for 36 consecutive months. If you feel that you're up to it, you should seriously consider taking a few more credits per term and graduate sooner. If you are borrowing any money, your debt will be smaller. Also, if you start in September and do the PT36, you will graduate in September. You will have to wait half a year, until February, to take the bar exam. I started the PT36 in May, graduated in May, and passed the July bar exam.

As for a 12 credit workload, just remember this... At just about every other law school in the country, the typical 1L workload is 15 credits. 12 is quite doable.

I started Cooley with the mindset that I was going to stick it out and not transfer. Once I was there, that mindset didn't change. Maybe I wasn't smart enough to know any better, but I was satisfied with Cooley. I even enjoyed living in Lansing.

Studies show no direct correlation between high LSAT scores and being a "good" lawyer. The LSAT is just a way to disqualify.....not qualify. When you have thousands of applicants that all have great resumes, great recommendations, and great grades...you have to have something else to separate the people that will get offers. These are not my words, by the way...its fairly common knowledge among anyone that has actually met "successful" attorneys. Many of them were terrible in school and had mediocre grades...even more went to second rate schools and barely got admitted. Honestly...how much of the LSAT covers the skills needed to be a transactional attorney? You don't need logic games for that....

The library is fantastic. It is new, modern, and a great place to study. I never had a problem finding a carrel or a study room. Cooley has amazing facilities, at least in Lansing (I have never been to GR, Oak, A2). HOWEVER, Cooley's ranking system, which places a great deal of emphasis on libraries, is a pitiful joke. When the annual Cooley rankings come out, I cringe.

Definitely the latter. Cooley people (students and administration more so than faculty) often feel the need to prove themselves and to tell people what a great place Cooley is. Meanwhile, I cannot remember any professor ever building up false expectations. The vast majority of my professors really seemed to care whether we were learning the material. Maybe they feel responsible for sending the survivors out into the world after they get their JDs.

Cooley can be a cold, harsh place. Everyone is well aware of the attrition rate. A good friend flunked out after she was almost two-thirds of the way through. It truly bummed me out -- for a moment. An hour or so later I was a cutthroat prick and I thought better her than me. Those with lower credentials (uGPA & LSAT) , myself included, are given the opportunity to graduate from an ABA approved school. They are also given the opportunity to fail.

You write very well. I am impressed that someone like you could end up so low at Cooley.

How is the Cooley alum network? Is it mostly limited to Michigan? Is it helpful?

What are Cooley exams like? Standard issue spotters? On a related note, what did you discuss in class? Did professors simply go over hypos that modify the BLL?

If you had to choose between hiring a median T14 student and another Cooley bottom-tier type, who would you hire and why? Assume similar personalities, or you can interview only one.

"You write very well." -- Thank you!

"I am impressed that someone like you could end up so low at Cooley." -- WTF?

Cooley alumni can be quite helpful. We try to help our own whenever possible. Cooley grads, if nothing else, are plentiful. Sheer numbers mean that some are bound to end up with good jobs and be smart. I didn't get my job by networking but many friends have. Cooley's reputation isn't as bad in Michigan as it is nationally. The typical Cooley student from Michigan tends to be much sharper than those from out-of-state -- I was from out-of-state, btw.

Cooley exams were a mixture of multiple choice and essays. No take-home exams. Lots and lots of issue spotting.

Classroom discussions were a mixed bag. My professors tended to analyze a few cases to death rather than use a blitzkrieg of hypos. With Cooley's admissions standards being what they are, there were more than a few dolts. They get called on as well. Did you have that torts case that dealt with Groucho Marx? We did. The called upon student had no idea who Groucho was. The professor was somewhat incredulous about it and the student meekly offered, "Didn't he have something to do with communism?" True story -- there's no way I could make that shit up. Gunners? Yes, even Cooley has gunners that will try to dominate the discussion. There's nothing like a Cooley gunner!

Median T14 vs. Cooley? I would want to take a good look at the cover letter and a writing sample. If it was still equal after that and I could only pick one to interview, I think I would go with the T14.

Here's the deal. I know I can write. Not to be immodest, but I know I can write pretty damn well. The problem is that I don't necessarily write very fast. If I'm writing a letter, an essay or a BRIEF, no problem. When I was writing final exams, I always found myself running out of time. Final exams at Cooley would last 2 hours, 45 minutes and some professors designed them so that they would be difficult or near impossible to finish. Some people would be finished way before time was up, where I could have used another hour. I always wondered how I would have done if Cooley had take-home exams as I hear some other schools have. Also, I thought I studied pretty hard but maybe I should have studied even harder.

Here is the one thing that pissed me off about Cooley more than anything else... It was too goddamn easy to find some quack, pay him a few hundred dollars, be diagnosed with a learning disability, and then get to write your exams in a special room taking as much time as you wanted. Maybe I should have done that but pride and personal ethics (stupidity?) wouldn't let me do it.

One more thing... While Cooley has more than its fair share of nitwits, those who truly don't belong get weeded out. Yes, it can be cruel. However, most of the people I knew there were actually fairly bright. We speak and write in complete sentences. We don't drool all over ourselves. We even pass the bar exam and get jobs.

One was quite legitimate. This person flunked out of school and was subsequently diagnosed with an actual learning disability. Said person was readmitted, started Cooley again from scratch, graduated, but has not yet passed the bar. I actually feel sorry for this person.

The other was "diagnosed" with test anxiety.

At my Tier 2, I know two people that do this. You have to have been diagnosed like years ago with ADD, OCD, or some other crap. One of these people, a girl, actually seems to have legitimate issues, but the other is a pretty smart guy who seems to have no issues at all in real life and who I believe is just faking it. Both are in the top third I believe.

Maybe it's harder to qualify for this at Cooley than I was led to believe. I don't know, maybe it's even legit. Legit or not, it pisses me off.

Completely independent. Thomas M. Cooley Law School is not affiliated with any other college or university. Founded in 1972 and received provisional accreditation before the first class graduated in 1975.

Joint MBAs and MPAs are available through partnerships with Oakland and WMU.

Less than 10 miles from East Lansing and about 70 miles from Ann Arbor for those who want to drink and hit on undergrads.

Four campuses and growing! Coming soon to a location near you!

ouch. How many grads does cooley churn out every year? It has to be 7 or 800. It looks like the measure of success at cooley is getting a job at all. It seems like that's what the handful of "successful" cooley students did.

as for transferring, I think the absolute top cooley 1L can transfer to a T25 or something, but I think it's pretty much impossible to go beyond that. Maybe the occasioanl oen egst gulc ea, but that's doubtful. There aren't columbia grads who started at cooley. Iirc most transferred to other t4 schools and T3 schools. Some got T50. Even the transfer options suck I guess.

You can actually transfer quite high, you just have to rely on more than your GPA alone (though obviously you need to be top 2 or 3%). I know Georgetown and Washington transfers personally, I know of a couple UMich transfers, and tons and tons of T1 transfers in general (but obviously that's not what you're thinking about). But you're right, T14 schools are very, very, very, very hesitant to admit Cooley students.

I worked at a small firm last summer and there was one Cooley grad attorney and one intern (who was part time and just needed a few classes to graduate.) The attorney was reasonably bright and the intern was fairly dense.

The attorney seemed just as smart as the T14 grads that also worked there.

That's good to hear. In my obviously biased opinion, I think the assertion that the top 5% at any bottom-rung school will stack up fairly well with upper tier grads holds water. Obviously, some of those people are going to be maniacally hard workers rather than naturally sharp, but that's not necessarily a knock on them.

It's actually not unheard of. From what I've heard (remember, I'm still only in my 2nd term) the most dangerous student at Cooley (other than fuck ups like me, or so I like to think) is the wealthy engineer or surgeon who decides to get his JD on a whim at 45. These people do not give a shit about school prestige; they're just there to do something new. Normally they don't constitute a threat, because they're simply not motivated, but if they find a class particularly compelling they'll book it.

I've actually been rather impressed by the quality of some of our professors, but obviously I don't have a lot to compare it to. The younger professors are especially interesting, because as 123 said, they're not there because they couldn't find anything else, but instead simply because they have families and wanted to settle down in the area for personal reasons. But again, I have virtually no experience from which to judge.

That's one of the reasons I'm giving transfer strong consideration. I don't think I'd deal well with that kind of reaction in an interview setting, and while obviously it doesn't get THAT bad, I have heard that some interviewers can be surprisingly unprofessional. I wouldn't say I have a smoldering temper, but I could see myself reacting poorly to a situation like that. Another Cooley student told me one interviewer referred to Cooley as the Applebee's of law schools recently. That would probably make me laugh. Regarding laughing in my face, I certainly wouldn't sue you. I might try to fuck your girlfriend if I knew you for a period of time, but since we're talking interview, that's unlikely. Either way, I'm only one term down, so that's a couple years away.

That being said, I know several students from AH campus alone that transferred to T1 schools.

OP here... I realize that some doors will always be closed to Cooley grads. I didn't bother applying to those places. Every place I interviewed at in Michigan had Cooley alumni working there. As far as the job I ended up taking (not everyone on XOXO can say that btw) outside of Michigan, no Cooley grads were here before I arrived. Graduating from Cooley did not prevent them from hiring me. Since I started my job, no one has ever asked me where I went to law school. That includes every lawyer I have met. Believe it or not, it just doesn't come up in conversation. If it ever does, I'll say, "I went to Cooley."

College prof. HAHAHHAHA. Yeah right. That is pretty much limited to HYS, and some possibility at Shitcago, etc. You aren't going to make transfer from Cooley to any of those schools... I realize you are looking at adjunct faculty, but those prof's typically are very accomplished and do some crazy ass shit (such as working on huge cases at large law firms) and you won't be doing anything like that from any school you go to. So YOUR FUCKED!

Your concise, cutting insight has crushed my dreams. I am shamed.

But yeah, you're wrong. A brief look at adjunct faculty listings at T1 schools alone shows that. Thank you, though, for the constructive criticism. I'm a cocky guy, I need to be brought down a few notches sometime.

It would be a generous mistake. The OP writes 100X better than you do.

OP in this thread seems like a cool guy, who accepts the shortcomings of Cooley but takes it all in stride and is happy with where he is. I wish you continued success.

OP, did you wipe your ass with your Cooley degree once you got it and realized you couldn't afford toiletpaper, and realized that the value of your degree is less then the value of toiletpaper, OR was it mailed to you with the shit on it?
