For me, it's Skynyrd. Now some might say they're properly rated, and to wit Freebird is not second most spun song of all time on classic rock radio. But my opinion is that they were still overlooked by critics and fans alike.

Mark Knopfler's solo work (Dire Strait's is properly rated).

MK/DS are overrated. Peak Boomer yacht rock nonsense. Like a worse version of Steely Dan or The Eagles. Somehow more boring than either. I will go so far to say that DS was not horrible, but they don't make you some in the know rock savant because you know he said nigger in some random song. Pass.

Okay faggot.

Calling Dire Straits overrated is some next-level contrarian brain rot.

"Peak Boomer yacht rock nonsense"?

Are you seriously trying to dunk on "Brothers in Arms" with that weak-a$$ take?

Mark Knopfler’s guitar work alone shits on half the classic rock catalog—name me one Steely Dan or Eagles track with a solo that hits like Telegraph Road.

You sound really mad. Sorry, friend!

Knopfler’s a goddamn legend, and you’re poasting like he’s some hack strumming margarita anthems.

Wake up. Someday, you'lll $ee.

I consider you the Rudolph of music takes. Aren't you one of those people who thinks 'Congratulations' is better than 'Oracular Spectacular' because it's 'more better'? You're the king of contrarian takes. Your point of view boils down to if it sucks it's really great, and if it's any good at all, it's trash. I hope your St. Vincent tattoo isn't removable so I can mark you for the woodchipper.

Yeah are they a little bit different than other soft rock? Yeah. But it's all soft rock. It's all clean guitar solos and shit that never gets heavy. They're not *that* different like c'mon. They're way more like each other than they are like Megadeath or something.

Yacht Rock is a latter day neologism that is essentially meaningless but soft rock is a contemporary term that did describe bands that were softer, per se, than hard rock. If you had Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hendrix, and AC/DC records and all of a sudden you heard DS and Steely Dan you would immediately remark that it has a softer, less edgy sound. Soft rock bands are also synonymous with and/or overlap substantially with muzak, elevator music, and bossa nova. Being chill, stylistically inoffensive, and blending into the background vs e.g. Immigrant Song or Voodoo Chile which punches you in the face. It's not debatable regardless of the terminology.

That being said, describing and classifying its sonic characteristic is different than whether or not it is good. In many ways if we accept the artistic intent of the soft rockers we can then analyze how well they accomplished their own mission. To that end Steely Dan mogs DS by a wide margin. DS is cosmically overrated as the traditional 'go-do' my middle aged lawyer dad just bought a strat and decided to noodle around to Sultans of Swing master men. You can put them in the same bucket as Rush and so forth. A corny middle aged dad band. And hey within that perspective DS IS pretty good. I mean, they were alright. If you like it, you like it. My main criticism of DS is that I think Knopfler is melodically weak. He is about a 5/10 songwriter. But a chill bro for chill doodikoffian jam seshes.

Watch the HBO doc, they actually do a great job with the genre definition and policing. It’s geneology is very specific to the group of musicians who were super accomplished session players that were pretty deliberate trying to fold in jazz influences they had and were commenting directly on each other and themselves/their moment is a very conscious and self-referential way with Steely Dan being the Elvis moment that consolidated and supercharged their efforts. Dire Straits were not at all that and were pretty clearly derived from other shit that developed in the UK around the same time, but they definitely tried to draft off/gesture toward yacht rock, likely because it was such an easy way to get record execs to respond and pay attention.

I don't watch any TV or movies. Just a studio rat. No time for documentaries.

That may all be true but DS still comes across as lesser soft rock. They didn't achieve the artistic complexity and the melodies aren't very good.

You still haven’t listened to Silverton Blues, have you, faggy?

You’re too busy frothing over a St. Vincent mention actually to engage with the argument.

Knopfler just released an album that, even in his 70s, embodies 99% of the ‘rock’ being made today.

That track alone is more raw, atmospheric, and technically impressive than anything $teely Dan ever touched.

But sure, keep screeching about "DEI" (faggot) and pretending you’re above it all.

The fact that a single mention of St. Vincent sent you into a Zeppelin-defense meltdown tells me all I need to know.

Go ahead, take 5 minutes out of your coping session and actually listen to the track.

I will wait. You gay nigger faggot.

there are some good bands that were big in canada but never crossed over that much into the US, like chilliwack or april wine. or cold chisel for australia.

some bands had good stuff before churning out bloated radio slop, like the scorpions. the entire first decade of their career is mostly forgotten aside from that one particular album cover. or robert palmer. or rod stewart.

part of the issue is that most classic rock bands are near-completely forgotten at this point. the genre got funneled into 'classic rock radio,' which ended up pruning away almost everything which didn't fit a handful of narrow algorithms.

there were all kinds of regional or middling (peaking around spots 30-60 on the Billboard 100 chart, for example) hits that vanished over time. eg, the marc tanner band had a few such songs, and some of them are good, but you'll never hear them unless you look them up yourself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGldsDBsNiQ

or an act like john cafferty and the beaver brown band, which had one gigantic radio hit (on the dark side) while the entire remainder of their long career is basically unknown.

in terms of famous bands which are underrated AS classic rock acts, probably alan parsons project and toto.

Motorhead, obviously they get a ton of love from musicians and parts of the metal world, but they deserved to be much bigger than they ever were, Lemmy had a really wide range of songs and they were still making good shit decades after everyone else around them had long grown lame as fuck

i’d say a band like the stooges would be more underrated. also very influential even though they weren’t around long but like half their songs were actually great

Don't Look Back is the second studio album by American rock band Boston, released in 1978 by Epic Records, as the band's last album on the label.[4][5] The album reached No. 1 in both the US and Canada, and No. 9 in the UK. The title track helped with the album's success, reaching No. 4 in 1978 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the band's biggest hits. The album sold over one million copies in the ten days following its release and was certified 7× platinum by the RIAA in the US on April 11, 1996.[6]

Allman Brothers, Cheap Trick, and ELO are all good choices. They all had long runs of numerous high quality albums and hit singles but aren't usually rated among the "greats" like Zeppelin, CCR, Stones.

A lot of the other bands listed above are one-hit or one-album wonders, which is different than being underrated.
