Angie Dickinson was smoking hot but there was no chemistry with John Wayne. the Dean Martin alcoholism arc doesn't ring true because it was using the old-fashioned idea of alcoholism as a simple morality issue. Ricky Nelson was there just for a star turn (although his musical numbers were 180).

but there were quite a few scenes that did work. the opening scene is superb.

the Mexican innkeeper and his wife are very funny.

the film was done as a counterpoint to High Noon, because Wayne and Hawks thought a sheriff shouldn't be wracked by self-doubt and run around and then be rescued by his Quaker wife.

he did a really good job with the first two. made great films out of “hobbits” and a gay wizard wandering around then middle of a trilogy no resolution, straying from the source material thing that really should have sucked.
