You forget how much paperwork the internet has eliminated. Correspondence via mail, bills, catalogues and magazines, financial records, the family calendar. Those desks were a hub of information pertaining to the family and have all since been turned into GC apps, inshallah.

Forgot about the family telephone directories. The one with every extended family members number, the doctors, the HVAC repair guy you used seven years ago. The church directory. The one from the kids school.

The long corded phone stretched out into the garage as you call your girlfriend for fifteen minutes after dinner while mom is doing the dishes and dad is watching the news.

Greetings,

My wife put one up recently. I got mad because I've been managing all the calendars on Google and sending her invites for years now, and she never participated, and now she expects me to participate in her birdbrain meatspace paper bullshit.

Great, honey, now we only know what the family's schedule looks like when we're physically at home looking at the wall in the mudroom.

That's great. In my current house we had the same floor tiles but tore them out a couple years ago and put wood flooring in.

Also, my house from when I was growing up had the same floor tiles in the foyer. I remember when they were all the rage--dogs like to lie on them in the summer.

Our cabinets in my current house were the same brown color as yours but we replaced the drawers with something white and did a sort of white wraparound on the rest.

I can just see him in the 90's, children about the move out of the house, plotting with the wife about how to build the most possible sqf by using cheaper materials and chuckling about how hard they could outboom their neighbors

Kids were living with us until 2005 and busy wrecking the house during psychotic episodes. House is extremely well constructed, but we did not have it built. Why spend $10K on a built in refrigerator when you can have a perfectly good one for $2K?

It came that way. Somebody else built the house. We just bought it and moved in. Built in refrigerators are a PITA anyway.

Greetings,

See how there's a phone there? That used to be on a cord, and you'd sit there in "comfort" while you did all your phone calls because the alternative was standing like an idiot while your sister talked for an hour about mom's declining health.

lmao. the house i grew up in (built in 1985) had a built in desk in the kitchen right next to our dinner table leading into the family room. It was always covered in loose papers and post-it notes. I do not remember the sliding drawer ever not being jammed shut.

My house had one of those too. Wife did a tear down and we removed it.

Growing up, we had one in the kitchen. It was supposed to be for the phone, so you could write down numbers or recipes or movie times I guess?

Also for paying bills which people usually did by writing a check and mailing it.

Also before phones, family members would need to leave notes for each other all the time, that was a place to do that too.

i think oldHLS may have already answered this, but it was place to sit while you looked through 23 lb phone book, and while you dialed the phone once you found the number in the afore mentioned book. It was also a place to talk on the phone and take notes with a paper and pencil if needed. also a place to put your coffee and cigarettes while you were on the phone ordering stuff out of the Sears catalogue.

What’s crazy is that the founding fathers would be amazed by the telephone, but basically everything else would make intuitive sense to them and be familiar in 1992.

Today? Nothing would make sense.

Just click that button and a toothbrush arrives this evening. No, you never discuss anything verbally with a human for anything ever. Sometimes you type to a robot if you have a technical problem.

Our house is from 92 and we have one of these. During COVID I ran a computer monitor to it from a PC hidden above the cabinets. Our oldest boy uses it to play games etc. I told my wife I'd move the computer but she likes having him using the PC out in the open.

We had one like it at our old house. The side of the cupboard by the phone was covered in phone numbers.
