Their 'breakout' commercial success came on the 10th album, 16 years into their career. How do you survive and make records for 16 years without a single famous song? And their biggest 'hit' peaked at 18 in the UK and never even charted in the US. How did they survive financially and not go out of business?

pre-Napster you could make a modest living as an indie label band. those records all sold like 50k copies, + touring + merchandising. it was a golden age.

Yeah you just have to imagine how sink or swim it is now. You either get huge on a big single and a meme or you can't even afford to play at the bar down the street, huh? You have to get maximum exposure and success to even hang on.

Those guys couldn't write a tune to save their lives but they could pay rent, got written up in Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, got to tour with the Chili Peppers. All before they broke through to the point they could charge a decent ticket price for one of their elaborate stage performances.

They probably had the most success of all time for a group of guys who absolutely sucked at songwriting.

it's a brutal grind now. most bands tour 300 nights a year or something because it's the only reliable revenue. or they try desperately to license music to advertising/TV/video games. everyone looks physically run down from performing thousands of hours a year, no security. all the recorded music feels disposable.

you used to have bands, even minor bands, who were famous for not touring at all, who were able to live exclusively on royalties.

Grim. Did you mean no financial security or like they can't afford to hire security personnel? Not sure which is worse.

What do you think a big band makes today in passive royalties from streaming platforms?

100%

It's amazing how low the bar is too like if you could hum any of their early songs I'd be completely amazed.

Yikes, I just listened to She Don't Use Jelly. Floored by its incompetence. These guys made Dinosaur Jr sound like they were trying really hard to make hit records.

well thats sort of the point, the cool kids don't want a hit record they want to listen to something esoteric with weird noises, and if you've ever listened to live music on hard drugs I can assure you things hit different, shit that is just noise to a normal person is transcendent

Don't you think cool kids eventually move on to something that combines artistry with songwriting talent? Or are you one of those people who thinks that Radiohead's sound is so mainstream that they may as well be lumped in with Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus due to their over the top cheesy melodies and sell-out vibes.

It doesn't have to be one way. It doesn't have to literally be awful and suck to be cool. It can be cool and be crafted to be enjoyable. The Flaming Lips sucked because they sucked. And by the way tons of excellent psychedelic music was made by people who don't do drugs. I dispute that you need to necessarily be high in order to 'get' it. The Dark Side of the Moon is the highest selling rock album of all time and it's got plenty of trippy sounds. You don't have to commit to the shtick of liking bad music to put on something that's going to melt your mind.

Kid A sold 1.5 million copies in the US, went platinum in US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, and Italy. It was Rolling Stone's best album of the 2000s decade. In all likelihood any 1 Radiohead record sold more than every Flaming Lips record combined and they went platinum 8 times. It's not remotely comparable. And no one has ever called them a 'festival' or 'druggie' band.

I'm not sure what your point is, that's how they managed to make a living and is the correct answer to the question, radiohead started life as a grunge band trying to make hits and so their weird shit still sold, but that just shows people do like weird stuff

Right what I'm saying is that when your first album goes platinum you can have a career in music doing what you want. Flaming Lips never went platinum, they never even came close to selling a million records in the US (or any country, although they did slightly better in the UK). We know where Radiohead got their money from, they had a few big singles on their first 3 albums. But you're missing the point entirely - if their weird phase hadn't been excellent those wouldn't have sold lots of copies either. The funny thing is you can't distinguish between one of the most commercially successful artistic rock acts of all time and a band that never, technically, by any identifiable metric, was successful at selling records, but was around for so long and came up with a festival gimmick that they were able to make some money at it. You really can't tell the difference and/or simply don't 'get' why a band as big as Radiohead can both make weird artistic music and write songs that are actually good and universally acclaimed.

idk if you're retarded or just illiterate, I said none of those things, I said they made a living playing druggie/festival shows and they did, that is the answer, you don't have to be commercially successful to sell weird shows to the people who want a weird show, phish has never had a hit song in their lives

the question in the OP is how did they survive financially long enough to put out 2-3 good ones most people would go completely broke and end up managing a Wendy's. That's what's hard to explain. There aren't any bands today where you go, they cut their teeth on 9 failed records before breaking out into success. It's mathematically impossible in 2025.

there are hardcore bands, like sick of it all and madball and terror, that make about enough to pay rent. i know some of these guys and they've been doing that for like 25 years.

the FL guys probably just had shit jobs and lived together in a ratty house. paid off, though. i bet they're all fairly well off now.

Right millions of people (millions more than who have ever heard of the Flaming Lips) have heard Kanye sing poopity-scoop but I think we can all agree that it wasn't a good song for obvious reasons. There has to be some discernable metric of quality.

you started this by talking about judging music by a "discernable metric" and using album sales. but bizarrely that only counts for some music. it must sell enough that it's famous but not sell so much that it's super popular. except for bands you do like, when they go multiplatnum that's a discernable metric of quality.

this isnt a cogent analysis, you just don't like some stuff.

flaming lips had a devoted fanbase for a long while. they were sort of like guided by voices in that sense. however, the larger point (awful bands from the 90's and earlier being able to make a living by doing live shows and selling merchandise) is true. for example, fred armisen was in a chicago-area band called Trenchmouth which he used to launch his TV career. Trenchmouth was awful. it's barely even music. but they did fine.

at least part of it seems to be local pride and a loyalty to municipal music scenes. if you were into early-90's chicago indie rock, then they were one of 'your' bands, and people from other regions didn't necessarily know about them, and that was special.

Most respectable thing about Wayne is his personal greed for fame and money. Despite not having any talent to speak of he willed himself into existence. His art is that some loser Gen X fag made a bunch of money and fucked some really good looking women while you were practicing law. His life and determination is the art. Not the songs. Just his life the way he turned out. Impressive.

Why do people do heroin? I have only ever taken lesser opioids from the hospital strictly for medical purposes. And I can honestly say that it was not at all enjoyable. The second I got better I stopped taking that stuff. The whole warmth all over your body sensation shit sounds retarded like it can't even be that great, can it? I have my doubts.

Drozd said in an interview that he had been addicted for 5 years, aware of his addiction, and that he no longer took it to feel good. I can't personally comprehend this level of addiction. Why do something that you don't like? He obviously detoxed a ton of times. Why do you go back idgi.

I think when you’re truly in addiction it becomes almost like medicine, in that you can’t function normally and have physical/medical side effects without the hit. Getting all the way through detox means getting through both the physical and mental hurdles, and obviously it’s quite a lot for most addicts.

Usually heroin addicts make sad, depressing music. To find that production sound from that mental state is truly bonkers.

They made a couple of excellent ones and then crushed it on the tour scene by booking very busy schedules and having a wide coverage range. Yuge merch sales with them. Indie bands have excellent fan loyalty

I am legitimately jealous of their live show ticket sales and merch revenue. Imagine how big they could have been with 1 or 2 more radio hits as good as Yoshimi.

The Soft Bulletin was my favorite

At War with the Mystics wasn't bad either. I agree that most of their newer stuff is on some sort of mediocre Yoko Ono tip

The couple of smaller shows I went to with them the merch tables were all sold out of most of the stock---only remember seeing that with one or maybe two other bands over the years iirc

They put a lot of effort into making the merch unique and rewarding. If they're gonna charge a lot for it they want it to mean something to people. I've seen some really big bands offer incredibly shitty merch and you can tell it was created in some board room nonsense meeting. But those indie bands really do have a bond with the fans which I respect, unlike their music which is trash in this instance.

I do think Wayne was a pretty decent visual artist/had a good eye for things that are eye-catching.

The hats were particularly neat and I may still have one in a box somewhere

Definitely re his taste for visuals. The weakest part of that band is the lyrics ime. Everything else is pretty good; he's a good singer, the instrumentation is great, and their stage presence was strong. The singer can't write lyrics without it descending into some bizarre latter day Syd Barret word salad pretentious schizobabble though. They could have really done well for themselves with a decent editor

I would take better melodies than better lyrics homie. I don't mind the weird themes but holy hell there isn't a melodic hook in sight.
