Whay happened was u had independent merchants hitting this place up but wanting to maintain their monopoly and keep it a secret. Consequently there were rumors of a secret rich huge island(s) to the west but no official record of it. Just portuguese doods coming back with small amounts of rare commodities they could sell for huge premium as a novelty.
The spanish crown got wind and realized the needed to make it official in order to get a slice of the pie. Not to mention it was common knowledge in the nordic countries of additional lands to the west (though it was mostly desolate hellscape: baffin island etc.)
This wasnt a giant leap of faith. Funny how history works though.
